I learned about this event when my friend Elaine Stone showed up for coffee in work-out gear and told me she was in training for the upcoming Riverwood Triathlon in Clayton, NC. I was, of coure, in awe.
Checking online, I found that this popular event includes a 300-yard swim, a 14-mile bike and a 5k run. The triatheletes start out in the waveless pool at the Riverwood Athletic Club, then transition to bicycles, and finally the run. The reward at the end is "one of the best post-event spreads in the state as pizza, pasta, and other goodies are on offer under the white tent at the finish line," according to a review on Active.com.
All participants must complete the race in under 2 hours, 15 minutes and -- this is humbling -- the minimum age to participate is 10.
The 2012 Riverwood Golf and Athletic Club Triathelon is scheduled for Saturday April 28. Proceeds will go to benefit Johnston County Habitat for Humanity and Johnston County Artists in the Schools. For entry fees and more information, visit the event website. It's not too late!
