Summit, New Jersey is in north western Union County and had the 16th-highest per capita income in the state as of the 2000 Census. As of the 2010 Census, Summit had a population of 21,457 and 36% of all households in Summit had school-age children.

In 1837, the Morris and Essex Railroad, which is now the Morris and Essex Lines of New Jersey Transit, was built over Summit. The railroad allowed Summit to outgrow neighboring towns which didn't have a train station. At that time, Summit became a country vacation spot for wealthy residents of New York City.
Summit is home to a large share of famous people - politicians, scientists, athletes and artists. Walter Brattain and John Bardeen, pioneers of the transistor, are both winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics and resided in Summit. In fact, John Bardeen is the only person to have ever won the Nobel Prize for Physics two separate times.
Many computerphiles will know the name of late summit resident Dennis Ritchie. Mr. Ritchie was the computer pioneer that created the C Programming Language and is the co-creator of the UNIX Operating System.
United States Representative for Florida, Tim Mahoney, grew up in Summit. Former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine calls Summit his home.
The head coach of the Jets Rex Ryan lives in Summit and is often seen frequenting businesses downtown. Former Kansas City Royal, speedy Willie Wilson was raised in Summit and played for Summit High School. In 1980 he set the Major League Record for most plate appearances in a single season. That record stood until 2007 when the Philadelphia Phillies Jimmy Rollins broke the record.
Several notable entertainers were born, raised or live in Summit. Among them are Charles Gibson the former host of Good Morning America, resided in town. CNBC's "mad man" Jim Cramer is a Summit Resident. Actor and rapper Ice-T spent much of his childhood living in Summit. But the standout Summit native goes to Meryl Streep. Streep has been nominated for more academy awards (17) than any other actor and has won the award three times.
The housing activity in Summit appears to be increasing slightly. The market data shows that homes are selling quicker now and have been moving at a brisker pace since 2008. The overall inventory is up in the last year which is why the absorption rate swelled from 14.2 to 16.1 in the last year. Summit is a GREAT town and the range of home prices is widely varied. Homes in the higher range (above $1,000,000) are starting to sell and in the last year 73 homes priced at $1,000,000 or higher have sold in Summit.
