The term didn't originate from Davenport, Iowa but maybe Davenport, Florida?  And yes, I still hear the term used occasionally.

How about you talking one of those Hawaiians into moving to Iowa?  I could teach them how to shovel snow!

I mean, come on, that has to be very boring living year round with 80 degrees and sunshine!  It's much more fun to throw in some sub-zero temperature days with 40mph winds and blowing snow!  Plus the cold kills off lots of germs.......really!  That's why Iowa has the oldest population of all the states!
