When the weather starts to warm up, all sorts of things start to grow.
Here in Sacramento, we have had a low rainfall total this year. The rains that we did get will be enough to get things growing when the weather starts to warm up. This is a good time to check the exterior of the property for signs of fungus growth.
After the rains have saturated the wood, we can begin to see signs of fungus “sprouting out” rather quickly. From a distance it may appear to be a piece of dirt or an insect nest. I’ve included an example of the fungus to show how innocent it looks. This may be signs of a greater problem than just cosmetic. It is likely to be evidence of wood rotting behind the trim board.
How do we know? Well the fact that it is coming from between two separate pieces of wood is a start. We don’t see this happening on the siding out in the open, where it may be a surface fungus. If we were to pull off the trim board, I am certain that we will find decaying wood. It may not be that serious of a problem.
Not sure about how to spot fungus on the outside of the property? Ask a professional for help. Many contractors will be more than happy to look at the situation and give you advice.By removing the trim, we may be able to clean up the trim and siding and be rid of it. Proper caulking can help to eliminate this from occurring again. It is best to catch this early before it harbors the fungus for too long, causing damage that will require the removal and replacement of the wood.
If you are in the Sacramento area, we would be more than happy to take a look at your property.
