Fanin County's Health Department is the designated agency for conducting restaurant inspections as required by Georgia law.  In November, several local restaurants were inspected.  Violations are categorized as:

  • Category I        Hazardous and violations must be corrected immediately
  • Category II      Critical and violations must be corrected within 72 hours
  • Category III     General

Georgia's food service regulations affecting restaurant food handling and inspection had several changes effective December 1.  A restaurant's inspection grade must be posted in plain view near the front door of the restaurant which also includes a drive thru window.  The inspection form will give a letter grade and a number grade.

  • A = 90 to 100 equals food safety excellence
  • B = 80 to 99   equals satisfactory compliance
  • C = 70 to 79   equals marginal compliance
  • U = 69 or less equals unsatisfactory compliance

Each restaurant will now be required to have a food safety manager on staff.  Other changes include:  double hand washing by food handlers after using the toilet (once upon leaving restroom and again in the kitchen); any employee who prepares read-to-eat foods must wear clean, disposable gloves and change gloves anytime an unclean surface is touched; on self service buffets or salad bars, new foods cannot be mixed with old foods already on the bar unless foods meet a standard temperature.  Also, these foods must be disposed at the end of the day or after a maximum of 24 hours.  To read about other changes, visit Georgia's food service regulations

5 Comments on Eatin' is Good in the Neighborhood ! Inspection of Local Restaurants in Fannin County

Donna, I think that information is invaluable, certainly something I'd love to have before I eat out!  I was shocked to hear our world famous Serendipities Restaurant was shut down after three violations...I believe their most expensive dessert is over $20,000  (That's right, I didn't add extra 0's).  Yet the place had to be closed for over a month.  Wonderful information for you to provide.

Carole:  Now that's a new one on me - a dessert over $20,000!  I can't even imagine what kind of dessert that must be.  I wonder what the three violations were?  You would think any establishment that can charge $20,000 for a dessert could at least keep the restaurant operating within the regulations.  I'm glad that restaurants are going to have to post their rating at the entrance at a drive thru window if there is one.  Thank you for your comment.

Donna,

What a cute way to present the local restaurants in your area. Happy Holidays also!

Tracy:  I'm just happy their scores came out so well!  I am surprised at one in particular though.  Blue Jeans has excellent food and they give you a ton of it!  I imagine their score will dramatically improve on the next inspection.  I would like to do more to showcase some of these restaurants but time is at a premium right now.  Thank you for your comment.
