Protect our Beaches and our Wildlife!

The Crystal Coast

Here on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, we take a lot of pride in our beautiful clean beaches, and the abundance of wildlife that we share our island with.  When folks casually throw their trash off to the side, we are concerned.

Thousands of birds, sea turtles and a variety of other wildlife are killed each year from plastic grocery bags, fishing line, kite string and other things that sometimes get left behind.  A grocery bag looks like a jellyfish when in the water and sea turtles eat them.... and die.  Do you really want to be responsible for that death?

Did you know that an aluminum can can take between 200-500 years to decompose in the environment.  Styrofoam even longer.     For a list of other items and their decomposition time, visit www.behealthyandrelax.com.

Thank goodness for Beach Clean Up Programs, and these wonderful little samaritans.... The Boy Scouts of America!  Their efforts go a long way and we appreciate them!  Now, follow their lead and help us keep our beaches beautiful and our wildlife safe!

Amy, Such an important message! In the mountains of North Carolina we often have some of the same problems. Most people are good about not  polluting but we all need a reminder

" When you spend time enjoying a beautiful treasure, leave it the way you found it!"  Thanks Amy!

Amy ~ It is amazing how people think they can just throw their junk anywhere. When we visit the beach it is like we are entering someones home. Take off your shoes, and please behave like you would in your own home. You are a guest! Thanks for reminding everyone just how special these places are, and just what can happen when we don't take care. The wildlife certainly do suffer.

Amy - good post, and a topic that is very near to my heart; I've always been enviromentally aware, and recycle/reduce/reuse whenever possbile. Styrofoam is evil, in my opinion!

Amy ~ It's nice to see the effort. Out here, our local board, does a highway cleanup twice a year. It's sad to see that tourists, that come up here to enjoy the beauty, discard their refuse where they see fit. Disrespect for nature sucks.

Good morning Amy,

"Leave only your footprints" is an excellent message! It does take a village to protect our natural resources and those boy scouts are always known for lending a helping hand :).

Amy,  I know those of us who live here on the island appreciate the tourists.  Without them, we would probably starve but some of them don't seem to value our precious environment as much as locals do.  I say that because I rarely see trash on the roadsides or beach during the off season but it gets pretty prevalent when the tourists return.  Maybe some of them are reading and will realize that this earth belongs to all of us and the "locals" should not have to clean up after the guests.

Good post!

Amy, I was watching a show that illustrated how plastic bottles have broken down into minute particles in our oceans and are having devestating consequences.  They might be recyclable, but often are not recycled at great cost to our Planet.

Humans are so casual in their destructiveness.  We like to consider ourselves the superior species, when in reality we are the least among us.  Like Wordsworth said "Sweet is the lore that nature brings; Our meddling intellect Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:- We murder to dissect.

North Carolina is "Mean About Green" and its residents take that motto to heart. That's why it's so beautiful here. But we also need to insure that our beaches are kept pristine too. So, if you live here, or are just visiting, please make sure that, as the sign in this post says, "Leave nothing but footprints".

Hi Amy,

Great message. I was a Girl Scout and later in my life I was a Girl Scout Leader. When we took the girls anywhere, camping, parks, events, we always told them to leave the area better than we found it and never leave trash. Your message is great as it is sickening to see trash on the side of the road and the freeways. Plus the whale rescue last month in Northern Caliornia was due to some fishing boats leaving their discarded nets in the ocean.
