We all know that preparing for the holidays creates tons of "stuff" to do and at our house that is no exception.  Beginning last night, the 15th, until Christmas Day we have to be somewhere every day or evening for some sort of celebration or event.

Last night we started off our Christmas marathon with a trip to Bellevue Square, a local mall, for Santa photo's and dinner with friends.  After dinner we stayed for the celebration.  An entertaining event where toy soldiers come to life and snow falls!  From there we took a walk around the park to the Group Health Ice Arena.  After making our way back to our cars we drove over to the Bellevue Botanical Gardens for Garden D'Lights where 500,000 twinkling lights have been transformed into flowers, lizards, birds, palm trees and lots of other things.  All done by volunteers.  Entry is free, parking is $5. or you can catch a shuttle.

By the time we got home it was 9:30pm and I was tired and my feet hurt.  But wait.....I need to go to Toys R Us one more time, but when is the million dollar question.  So at 10pm my husband, who is usually Mr. Ba-humbug, says lets go!  While I was getting the boys to bed he had called and they were open until midnight!  And on a rare occasion my 20yr old daughter was home.  What could I do?  I certainly couldn't say no, after-all Travis was excited and wanted to go!!  So off we went.  By the time we got home and wrapped the gifts we crawled into bed at 1:30am!

Needless to say we were slow in rising this morning.  My 8yr old had to be at a birthday party at noon.  My 5yr old had a birthday party to go to at 1pm and my husband was going to help friends finish installing their new windows.  In our house Sunday is also laundry day and we had to be at friends at 5:30pm for a get together!  So we get all the laundry sorted, the kids have breakfast and my husband takes our 8yr old and they leave at 11:30am.  Meanwhile my very good friend calls me and tells me her sister just called from CA.  She has been diagnosed with breast cancer and needs a mastectomy on Wednesday.  We are supposed to go to her house tonight for our families Christmas get together, but understandably she's not feeling very festive.

I ask that everyone say a prayer for Betty Lou as she begins her battle with breast cancer.  Animations-PinkRibbon.gif

While I was really sad and worried for them, I'm actually a little relieved that this frees up our evening so I can get my Christmas letter and cards done.  Oh, and my sister has been text messaging me about gift ideas for my kids for the past hour too!  Now it's noon and I really need to get in the shower.

About 12:15pm my 5yr old tells me he's going potty.  About 12:20pm he tells me he clogged the toilet.  I replied OK but between running out of time and texting with my sis it didn't really register.  At 12:45pm as I'm throwing my clothes on, Ethan runs in and proclaims

"Mommy it's raining in the kitchen!"
I said "you mean outside it's raining"
He said "no it's pouring down in the middle of the kitchen!!"

I ran down the stairs and water is pouring out from around the can lights and the sprinkler head.  Since we live in a townhouse, code requires sprinkler systems.  At first I think the head sprung a leak, then I remember......

CRAP!  THE TOILET!  ETHAN SAID HE CLOGGED IT!

I ran back up the stairs to 3" of standing water in the bathroom.  It's beginning to flow out the door and into the hall where all the piles of laundry are waiting to be done!  I shut off the water and run for the plunger in the other bathroom.  Then I grabbed all the clean and dirty towels.  I threw some down on the bathroom floor and ran back down to the kitchen and managed to stop the water before flowing onto the dining room or living room carpets!!  I noticed that the stream of water was now slowing to a trickle then a drip!  So back up the stairs I go to start wringing out water into the tub from the bathroom floor.  Then Ethan says "Now I can't go to my party" to which I have to say no and he has a melt down.  As you can imagine that was not the time to have to deal with a 5yr old having a melt down.  I did manage to get a hold of his sister and she was on her way home to take him to his party.  I also called my husband and said it was raining in the kitchen.  He came right home!

Well after 4.5 hours we managed to have all the water sopped up.  We now have three or four holes in our living room ceiling where we sucked water out from between the floors.  The carpet  is pulled up outside the bathroom door and around the laundry closet.  There are fans and heaters going and I'm happy to report it's drying quickly.  We did cut the pad out and will have to replace that tomorrow but that's no biggie!

Ironically, I wrote a post last week to which I need to complete part 2, about the floods in our area.  While my hours of extra time I was given didn't get spent on writing a letter or Christmas cards, I did get a teeny tiny taste of what all those people are still having to deal with in the devastating floods of December 3rd.  Many are still cleaning up now two weeks later and many many families have lost everything.

It may have been an inconvenience but I still have my home and I didn't lose anything, for that I am thankful.  I am also grateful that it started raining in the kitchen before I left for the day or we'd have come home to the upstairs in the living room and the living room in the garage below!!

Again I ask that you say a prayer for Betty Lou and also for all the families and businesses dealing with the storm damage.

Sandy, I remember in years past being so busy I did'nt really get to enjoy the season. Don't forget to slow down and take a look around. This time of year comes and goes to fast!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

12/17/2007 12:35 AM by Rob Baldwin, Santa Clarita REALTOR® (Pinnacle Estate Properties)

Sandy - Sounds like some stressful days that you have had.  I am also happy to hear that you noticed the water before it got worse.  I will pray for Betty Lou.  I hope you have a terrific week, despite the yucky damage.

12/17/2007 12:38 AM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Yowza.  What a day.

My thoughts and prayers are with Betty Lou, for an easy surgery and a quick recovery.

I'm guessing that the next time you hear the words toilet and clogged in the same sentence, you'll investigate right away!!!  Hope your clean-up goes smoothly.

Oh no!  I would not want to be in your shoes with this happening.  hope it gets better.

I will keep your friend Betty Lou in my prayers.  I will also say one for you.  Wow, sounds like you could use a little down time.  As mentioned above, try to take a moment to breathe.  Life is too short not to.  Enjoy your family, the season, and have a Merry Christmas.

12/17/2007 02:06 AM by Linda Sanderson (Coldwell Banker Solano Pacific)

Rob  I love this time of year even with all the chaos.  But you are right it does fly by and then there is a bit of let down.  I am officially done with ALL my shopping so now I can just relax and enjoy!  Thanks for reading and the great advice!

Jason  thank you for your prayers, that means a lot because I know you know the power of prayer!  I did notice that all the water was clear so I think the "yucky" went down and stuck and the toilet didn't know it was full and just kept filling.  We've had to jiggle the handle recently, may be time for a new toilet!  Thanks for your comments and support!

Nancy  thank you so much for your prayers.  They are much needed now by Betty Lou and her family.  And yes toilet clogged will mean instant action!! :0}.  Fortunately both my husband and I are quick on our feet and most of the clean up is done.  Just waiting for things to completely dry out before putting it all back together.  Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Gary  thank you.  We are done with the clean up, after Christmas we'll do the repairs.  Make sure everything is well dried out!  Thanks for commenting!

Linda  thanks so much for the prayers, it is truly appreciated.  I am going to take all the advice and begin enjoying the Christmas season.  I got my letter/cards done tonight and that was the last item on my list.  Now....I'm going to take a deep breath and do like you said....enjoy!  Thanks for commenting.

I think your Crap and Toilet connection in one title says it all - motherhood is hard and adding realtor to that description just magnifies it.  Good luck in the future.  My kids are old enough to unclog their own drains, most of the time.

12/17/2007 03:19 AM by Susan Walters (Keller Williams Realty, Ann Arbor, MI)

That happened to me last year.  I had fallen asleep on the couch and heard water pouring in the kitchen.  In a haze I yelled at the kids to turn the water off, then relized it was not a faucet running but actually the dog peeing in the kitchen (which has never happened).  I jumped up to investegate and walked right under the stream.  I ran upstairs and one of the kids plugged up the sink to play with a Happy Meal Toy let it over flow and left the water going.  Don't really know who did.  They blamed each other and thats the story they still stick with.  WHAT A MESS.

12/17/2007 10:49 AM by Chad Baird (Re/Max Spirit)

Susan  thanks for stopping by and reading!  Yes motherhood and Realtor is a tough mix but one that allows me to do what I want, when I want and be with the kids!!!  Somehow we manage!

Chad OMG that is funny!  I'm glad I didn't walk under the waterfall in the kitchen!  I probably would have lost my sense of humor about then!!  Isn't it funny how the kids will fight constantly but when they need an ally, bam it's done!!!  Thanks for commenting and the visuals!!

OMG, Yuck!!!!  Unfortunately my 15 year old did the same thing a while back.  It didn't get on the carpet because he had so much dirty clothes around the toilet that it soaked it up.  At least the part that didn't run into the garage.  Luckily we caught it before leaving for church.

Good thing your husband is handy.

SANDY - Your day sounded like something out of a movie.  I was exhausted for you after reading it.  I hope that Betty Lou wins her battle with breast cancer.

What a way to spend a Sunday.  Glad you were able to catch it before you left for the day.

12/17/2007 02:18 PM by Kim Peasley-Parker (AgentOwned Realty)

Sandy, I clicked expecting some play on words with "Rain" and "Active Rain" but you were being literal!  What a mess!  Your account left me LOL, (sorry!).

It does sound that you are getting things done for the holidays, though.  Nice description of your holiday night out.  Best wishes to your friend, Betty Lou.  May all her new year be clean and clear!

Karen so you know my pain!!!  I'm glad you caught yours too, think how bad it could have been.  For some reason I thought if it was clogged it would just flush and not refill.  That's what our other two toilets do!  Yes I am sooooooglad Trav is handy!!!

12/17/2007 02:33 PM by Sandy Noll - Realtor, eAgent (Keller Williams Realty Kirkland)

Adam after a while we just had to laugh!  I was really tired by the end of the day and slept like a log!!!  With everyone praying for Betty Lou anything is possible!!  Thanks for your comments Adam!

Kim me too!!  It wasn't exactly what I had in mind for Sunday but I think it was a subtle reminder that we were lucky in spite of a big mess to clean up!!

Elaine it's ok to laugh, I was too by the time we were all done!  What else can you do???  Thanks for the wonderful comments and wishes for Betty Lou!  It's appreciated more then you can know!

Sandy,

I haven't been over here to comment for awhile; your mom told me about the disaster in your kitchen.  You need to listen little Boo Boo!  LOL

Mike in Tucson

12/18/2007 11:42 AM by Mike Jones (Tucson Mortgage Company, LLC)

I can't think about how many times I turned the kitchen sink on to fill the sink for dishes and forgot about it.  Luckly nothing more than a few towels couldn't wipe up.  But I do have memories as a child, running to my parents in the middle of the night to tell them it was raining and the roof was leaking.  You see, I was on the bottom bunk with my brother on top.  Can you guess what he did??:)

12/18/2007 11:47 PM by Jennifer Hartwick (Coldwell Banker Tatie Payne, Inc.)

Mike you are absolutely right!!  I WILL listen to Boo Boo right away next time!!  Thanks for stopping in!

Jennifer you poor thing!!  I hope you have gotten even with him!!  We are all dried out now and aside from the ceiling patch which we are doing after the holidays everything is put back together!!  Thanks for sharing your story!!

Sandy- I will say a prayer for your friend as so many people said prayers here on the rain for me and it turns out I do  not have cancer. Prayer is a powerful thing! I am sorry you had such a rough day. Just thank God you have flushing toilets! Some blessing that is! Most of the world does not have indoor plumbing. Katerina

12/22/2007 01:37 AM by Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Realtors® Wellington Florida Luxury Homes (International Properties and Investments, Inc.)

SANDY- I did not see this when you wrote it originally, but I still wanted to comment now. I truly hope that things are getting back to normal for you...that the cleanup is complete. MAN! I can so relate to this!! Still...what struck me...as you were writng about your crisis...you were also sharing about Betty Lou's battle with breast cancer. Your post is a reminder that no matter what we are going through, there is always someone else who is going through something more difficult. I love the message of gratitude in your writing. It speaks to your heart. Blessings, my friend!!

Katerina thank you for the prayers.  I'm sorry it's taken so long to respond.  I did not know about your cancer scare but I'm glad to hear you got the all clear.  It's such a scary thought.  And you are absolutely right I am sooooo grateful for a flushing toilet even if it does overflow!  Thanks for commenting.

Elizabeth yes the cleanup was done within a few hours.  We were dried out within about 3 days and just this past weekend we got new carpet pad down and the carpet back in place.  Now all we have left is patching the ceiling holes.  Thank you for the kind words.  It is so true that my problems are minuscule compared to so many others.  We still have people trying to dry out after the big floods in December.  And Betty Lou's prognosis looks good.  I don't take a moment for granted and am grateful for having just a toilet flood us out!!  Thank you for commenting and adding me as an associate.  You are a remarkable woman who has been through so much and yet you are still grateful for all you have.  You are a true inspiration.

Oh gosh.  You are so right, be thankful for the important things and don't sweat the small stuff.  Love the mommy element of this...I am grandma of 5 and we have those stories all the time.

01/09/2008 01:51 PM by Terrylynn Fisher StagersLIST.com Buy Stage Sell (Diablo Realty)

Terrylynn thanks for stopping in.  I don't know if I could handle it happening all the time, but I truly am grateful it was just some wet carpets and a couple holes in the ceiling.  Enjoy your grandma days and be sure to share some of your stories with us here on AR.
