North Carolina Celebrates Wright Brothers First Flight

On a cold, windy day in December, 104 years ago man first flew with the birds in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Today is a very important and memorable day in North Carolina's history and the history of aviation.            North Carolina first flight thoughts by Onslow County Home Specialist

It was on December 17, 1903 that Orville Wright made a 12-second, sustained flight which took off from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.  It was the first successful, powered, piloted flight in history.

The flight might have happened on December 13 , the weather was ideal..but that was a Sunday and the brothers had promised their Dad they would not attempt the flight on the Sabbath.  The weather conditions worsened for the next few days but on Thursday Orville and Wilbur decided that if they were going to get back home to Ohio for Christmas, they had to go ahead with their attempt.

The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, first experimented in 1899 after Wilbur wrote the Smithsonian requesting information on flight experiments.  They spent many hours watching and observing birds in flight.

For three years the Wright brothers built and tested numerous gliders and kites which met with disappointment, failure and/or limited success before launching their history making flight in 1903.

Due to the discipline, imagination, persistence and faith of two young men, that little wood aircraft brought all the essentials that still give flight to every modern aircraft.

We can all take a lesson from Orville and Wilbur's optimism, determination and faith.  I can imagine that there were many times when they were tempted to throw in the towel and go back to their bicycle shop.  But they believed in their dream of man flying and did not give up.

Do you believe in what you are doing?  If you do,

  • hang tough

  • work hard

  • believe

  • and you too, will succeed

I remember briefly when I was a kid...our school used to run movie documentaries about the Wright Brothers.

Cynthia - Thanks for the post! It is true that hard work, hanging in there, and believing are all keys to success. Good luck and Merry Christmas.  8-)

Cynthia - hanging in is tough..I think it's the hardest part of the job sometimes. Each day is new and we have to approach it that way. Yesterday is gone, so it's onward and upward!

Even though it's been 104 years isn't it incredible the advancement we've made in air travel. I'm still amazed at how those things get off the ground!

Patience and persistence pays off.

Most people fail because of the lack of persistence.

Cynthia...   thanks for the quick history lesson. But also the meaning behind this post in regards to hard work, determination, and follow through....which would be believing to succeed.

Cynthia, You have to admire and respect them.  Determination and persistance are key words in anything you do and really want to accomplish.  Wise words.

Cynthia- I had forgotten this part of History.   But above and beyond the lesson is what you stated on HOW they succeeded......now that is a lesson that is timeless....you put the two together very nicely, Thank you :)

Hi Neal,
The question is "were you paying attention and how much do you remember"?  :0)

Thanks Michael,
Sometimes when the going is tough it is difficult to hang in there and keep a positive outlook but in the end, the ones that do get the prize.

Keith & Robin,
Keeping our focus is difficult at times.  There are lots of distractions to pull us away.  Thank you.

Hi Linda,
I don't know which amazing me most--that a plane can fly or a ship can float.  LOL!

Erby,
That is true--I see it all the time.  People are so impatient with everything and some things just take time and patience.

Hello Jeff,
I thought you might have missed the Wright Brothers history lesson while you were horsing around!  :0)

Hi Diane,
Well, I would not have known the date either but I caught it on the news early yesterday morning and it seemed like a good subject for a post.  :0)

Hello Elizabeth,
Thank you for your kind words.  I think there is a message in most everything if we look for it.

Carole,
I do agree with you, determination and persistence gets the job done!  Thanks.

Hello Kathy,
Thanks.  There is much to be said for hard work, determination and faith, isn't there?

Susan,
Go easy on yourself, dates do not stick with me--I heard about the anniversary on the news.  :0)  When we were kids, we loved to visit and run up the  sand dune.
