The groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Boulder Crest Retreat in Bluemont Virginia is scheduled for Memorial Day 2012.  The 37.5 acre retreat is being designed to create an accessible environment for wounded warriors and their families to be able to spend time away from military hospitals and enjoy time outdoors.

According to the Boulder Crest website the retreat will feature:

"ADA handicap accessible “greentech” cabins, available for 2-7 days for approx. 250-500 families per annum.

An ADA handicap accessible “greentech” barn/meeting house with organic farm-to-table meals.

A walled organic Victorian garden, plus a field of organic produce.

A bird sanctuary and fishing pond.

Nature walks, foraging, photography, bird and wildlife watching, as well as therapeutic dogs, archery and other onsite adaptive sporting activities."

We are fortunate in Northern Virginia to be close to three major military hospitals, Bethesda, Walter Reed and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital that are offering state of the art care and facilities for wounded veterans.  The new Wounded Warrior houses at Fort Belvoir are the prototype for housing to be built across the US.  The new Fisher House will be opening soon for families visiting loved ones at the Wounded Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Belvoir.

The new Boulder Crest Retreat will be another welcome addition to our area to support our troops.

Cindy- this is exciting news.  When we lived in Leesburg we often went to Bluemont and the Bluemont Fair.  This will be a beautiful area for our very special wounded warriors.  They deserve so much more.

Yolanda-the more we do as individuals and a country to show our support for our veteran's and their families the better, in my book.
