There are more and more companies than ever before that will show you the "secret to success in real estate."  Add to that the issue that so much information is available online, everyone has become an "expert" in real estate and you have quite a mess on your hands.  Today, not only will the marketing companies sell you the secrets to success, but your mother, friend and neighbor all have the answers too.  How confusing is that!

Here's what I believe...  There is no "secret plan."  There is not one approach that will work for everyone.  We are all individuals.  Not until you take a good, hard look at yourself will you figure out what works and what doesn't for you.

Let's use the top producers (or any business for that matter) in your area as an example.  Are they all doing the same thing?  Does their business come from the same source?  No.  It doesn't and it never will.  Why?  Because there is enough business out there for each of us to develop our niche and be successful.

The same solution will not work for everyone because we are all unique.  Some of us have great personalities for open houses.  Some of us have the ability to create clients from online contacts.  Some of us are incredible at cultivating referrals from the community.  Whatever your strengths are, find out and use those to your advantage.

The flip side is you need to be honest about your weaknesses.  Do you need help with follow-ups, contact management, marketing, or organization?  If you can, delegate the areas where you need a little assistance.  Not only will you save yourself the frustration, but you'll free up even more of your time to go and build your business in ways that you are good at.

There is no secret plan.  What are you doing today to move your life forward?  Make every day count.

Jen good points. While there's a good argument to be made for the individuality of each person's success, one cannot lose sight of the fact that it's not always necessary to reinvent the wheel. There are good ideas out there and it's not rocket science!

Success comes from hardwork, expertise comes from experience and knowledge. Be fearful of those who claim to know everything, for they actually know least.

Hi Colleen.  I certainly don't reinvent the wheel, but I know me and I know what works for me.  So, I "borrow" ideas that have proven to be successful.  Don't we all?

Hi Zen,  I certainly don't know it all or will ever claim to.  Hardwork, experience and education is the plan for me.  Now that I think about it, you're probably right.  The ones who claim to know it all might actually know the least.  Thanks!

Good point, being able to talk to people and working hard is what works.

Jen,

These firms peddling secret formulas to success are the only ones making money off the thin ideas. They keep doing it because there are enough buyers, or dreamers, for them. Good pointers.

Thanks Esko!  I will admit, those firms did find their market!  There will always be people looking for shortcuts to success.

Jen, your comment about everyone has become an "expert" is so true. The problem is that many of these people don't see the whole picture. Far too often all the info is not available to them but they still think they know it all. Makes things a little more difficult. Good post.

Thanks Wayne.  I think our real job as agents is becoming how to sift through the information and find what is relevant for our clients, because they don't always see the whole picture.  Don't even get me started about how the media adds to this problem.

The consumers seem to be so well-read they won't allow themselves to be told any different.  You truly have to know your job and probably be willing to sever ties at some point if it isn't working well.

Jen, you are right.  There are no shortcuts or sure things.  Here is a great "Real Estate B.S. Artist Detection Checklist" from John T. Reed's website.

Jen, The secret to success is as you stated: be yourself and work hard (smart?). Good post.

Nice post!  Folks do need focus, honesty with themselves and now in this market, funds to keep them going!

Hi Latonia - I think that is an issue that all of us struggle with - is when are we willing to sever ties is something isn't working.  Good point.

Hi Frank - the BS Detection Checklist sounds very interesting.  I'll have to read over that!

Hi Bill - Yes, I suppose I should clairfy.  Working harder doesn't necessarily equal success.  Working smarter, may.

Hi Frances - I think we would all like a little more funds to keep us going somedays.

Thanks for reading everyone!
