If you're like me, you like the idea of text messaging as a means of communicating with your collegues, and maybe even your clients, but the actual practice is not always practical. For example, popular concesus is that texting while driving is a VERY bad idea. Texting while walking around can cause any number of embarrassing accidents; and texting while with clients or, anyone else for that matter, just doesn't look great.
Then there is the ancient method of actually using the phone to call someone. What is this, the stone age?
All kidding aside, some communication situations call for something other than the standard text message or phone call. Wouldn't it be great if you could combine the ease and clarity of a phone call with the convenience of a text message? You can with my new favorite app, Voxer!
Voxer is an App (available via the Apple App Store as well as the Android App Market ) which turns your smart phone into a Walkie Talkie, where by you can communicate (free of charge) with any one else who has the app! You may be thinking; "Walkie talkie? isn't that old technology?" Yes, but this isn't your child hood walkie talkie. When someone sends you a message, you get an alert on your phone, just like you would with a text message. Whenever it is convenient, you simply open the app and tap on the new message, and listen. It is literally the love child of a voice mail and a text message!
By now you are thinking, "Yes please! How do i get this App?!?!" Here's how:
First, search for the Voxer App:
Next, install it:
Once installed, find it on your home screen:
Open it up, and create an account, or login with Facebook:
Once you've signed up, you're ready to find your friends who are on Voxer, and start communicating! You can do this my searching your own contacts via the app:
Or by searching, by name, everyone who is on Voxer:
Once you've found your friends, it's time to start Voxing! Simply hold down the "Hold and Talk" button, and record your message:
Here is how each conversation is displayed:
Just like text messages, only, instead of having to read each message, you can listen to them, whether you're at the office, or on the go!
I hope that this little tutorial was helpful and that you all find Voxer as useful as I do. Please let me know your feedback below!
