Update from the Sheriff

As an active member of the township I received this update from the Sheriff.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office wants to remind you not to leave valuables in your car.  There have been some laptops stolen out of vehicles in Liberty Township.  Please keep your valuables with you or keep them out of sight.  Remember to lock your vehicles.

It came to mind who would leave their laptop or other belongings in an unlocked car parked on the street or in a driveway? Yes we feel that our car parked in our driveway is safe but really would you leave cash spread out on the seat of an unlocked car? That is what you are going when you leave valuables in plain sight in an unlocked vehicle. These are not planned crimes or even crimes where force has been used. These are called crimes of opportunity.  Please when you have to leave thousands of dollars worth of personal belongings in a car in plain view of anyone who walks by just lock your vehicle. It could stop a needless crime and save you days of work trying to replace the lost data on your missing laptop.

Always a mystery to me why people leave stuff like that in their car.

Last year I found my neighbor's driver's license laying alongside the road as I was running.

When I returned it she said it was in her wallet which someone stole from her car at the same time they stole her cell phone!

I guess if someone leaves their wallet and cell phone in the car it's not too big a stretch to believe they could leave their laptop too.

Amazing.

A friend of mine had her car damaged and burgled for a "complimentary" calculator left in the console.  It looked like a Palm.  What a waste for everyone.

IT was a busy parking lot with restaurants, etc.  Not more than 50 feet from our office front door.
