As the end of the year quickly approaches, it’s a great time to tidy up and tie off any loose ends. While you are busy trying to finish up your end of the year todo list. Be sure to make time to give your site an annual checkup. Here are a few tips…

Contact Information

Ensure that all of your contact information is still current on your website. Don’t just check the contact us page but all the other places your contact info may appear (including your footer).

Are You Still In Compliance?

Has your company changed their required disclosures or branding requirements? What about your board? Can you still use terms like MLS?

Outgoing Links

Outgoing links all too often become dead links, this is because sites may move content, redesign their site or remove resources. So be sure to check all those links that link to 3rd party sites. And don’t just check to see if the link works. Check to make sure the content is still relevant and that the site isn’t advertising your competition. Yes, it can happen. We saw that one of our clients was linking to the real estate section of the local online newspaper. When someone clicked on that link, there was a huge banner ad for their biggest competitor!

Test Your Forms

It’s always a good idea to ensure all of your forms are still working in proper order. Also use this opportunity to look at things like required fields and confirmation emails. You may want to also ensure that the form properly notifies you of new leads.

Are You Still On Target?

What about your title tags and keywords for your website? Are you still on target? Does your site still have relevant content for your target audience? Are all the resources on your site still up-to-date? Calendar of events, Local businesses, etc. nothing drives people away from a website like old, outdated content!

I know, as if you didn’t have enough things to do already! But remember, these small little things may be the difference between an out dated website and an online lead generating machine!

Happy Holidays!

Brad, thank you for the checklist!  These maintenance issues are something we tend to overlook.

This is a great checklist. Be sure to check your blogs as well as your website. If you have a story or photo on your website and you refer to it in a blog comment and then delete the story or photo the link from the blog will dead. I recently realized I had a bunch of bad photos on my blog articles because I had been linking to photos on my site that had been deleted over time.

Great advice David. Little issues like that can effect both a website and a blog. I even found a few of my AR post that link to resources that I no longer have on my website! I have already started on my own todo list!

Thank you for a great post - and I totally agree with you. I spent several hours today going over my site, and checking every single link. Apparently nothing stops a spider quicker than a broken link. Also, I kind of re-considered how many outbound links I have - I don't want to drive people away from my site.

I also added more relevant information.

Great post and thanks again!! I will definitely use it - now and in the future.

Happy Holidays!

Great ideas for the upcoming new year ... this is also a great time to plan the year instead of waiting until April to examine your books

Brad,

Very good advice.  I try to do these things every once-in-awhile throughout the year, but good idea to do all of it now so nothing is overlooked.

Brad - Thank you for the checklist reminder.  It also reminded me that I need to check-in with Leslie to add some more data to my site.  I also believe she's checking out some other things for us, too.  You have a fabulous team, Brad.  I want to thank each of you for all that you do.

Have a fabulous week!

Brad,

I just went through your checklist and found a major failure on my IDX provider's end. It was a quick and easy fix, and I'm glad I caught it. Thanks for your post.

Brad, Like everybody else, I wish you posted more often. But when you do post it is great.

Nothing worse than dead links. Really good advice.

Brad - #1 is a big one. There are a lot of people that have old contact information on the Internet. We work so hard to get our name out, it is pretty defeating to learn that your phone number or e-mail are no longer valid.

Just like Santa's list, checking it twice and making sure you are dotting your i's. I just went to the CE class on ethics and learned that it has made changes every year since 1986 except 1988. Talking about staying on top of things.

I want to say thank you to Brad and his company Dakno Marketing for building me an amazing website and for putting so much FREE Content on Active Rain.  So many posts on AR are for earning points and that can get in the way of quality content....not ever the case with Brad's posts.

Thank you and keep writing great articles!
