"I just can't".

"Its the market".

"I am no good at this".

"Everyone else has such good luck. If I did not have bad luck, I would have NO luck".

"Nobody is buying right now".

"In the Spring, things will be better".

"Why are you doing that blog thing - its just dumb".

Come on.. are we serious? These are phrases - no let me change that, these are ditch digging phrases that I have heard in the past 5 days and it infuriates me. Here is how I really feel.

If you can't - then move over for someone that can. This is not a pity party and if you "can't", then just don't. Don't whine about things you can't do - The term I CAN'T, in my opinion is one of the most destructive sales term that there can be. Maybe you can't do something this way, but if you change your ways, maybe you "Can"?

If it was the market's fault then NO ONE would be buying homes. I know I have listed and sold during this time and I have survived. The market indicators show that there is no bubble, there is a correction. That is a big difference. It is how you look at real estate on a personal level.

If all the good calls only came to one person all the time - could it mean something else? If all the listings came to that same person time and time again, could it mean something else? If the same agent has sold homes, while you did not - could it mean something else? How could all the good luck continue to go to one person? Gambling in the Casinos is GOOD LUCK, not selling real estate. Its understanding what you are selling and where you are selling. It is changing how you think that will cause people to want to business with you. If you don't think you can do something - why should your customers or clients? Change your thinking.. Change your "luck".

There was a story of a man who ran a marathon in less time than any person. The story of Cliff Young. This man showed up at a marathon when he was 61 years old. That is not the odd part, when he came to the marathon he had never ran a marathon before. This was going to be his first. But what Cliff Young did not know was HOW to run this marathon. See all the seasoned professionals ran this race in 5 days. They would run for 18 hours and sleep for 6 hours. This is what everyone knew to do. They trained a lifetime to run in this race. But poor old Cliff Young did not know that. So when the race began, he ran. That is it. He just kept running. He did not know how to run. The spectators laughed at him as he passed by because he was shuffling as he ran. He took his time, but stayed focused on running. He won first place, breaking the race record by 9 hours and became a national hero!

Why did he break the record? Its not because he did not sleep - its because he did not know any better. He did not let the "seasoned veterans" taint his brain. He came to the race with a mission at hand. He wanted to run. There was no competition, this was for him and him alone. Little did he know that the first prize for this race was $10,000. - He did not accept the money, instead he gave the money to other runners who worked hard.

My point is - sometimes you have to not listen to what others are saying. Look into yourself for the answers and decide for yourself. The bad thoughts or the negative images that you provide for yourself will not help you succeed. Change the way you think, and you will change your own outcome!

Christine ~ good thoughts for the 1st of 2007! I call listening to others "giving up your power". That power is the ability to think for yourself and follow your instincts. I can recall in my life the biggest mistakes I ever made were when I relinquished my power.

Happy New Year to you!

Christine - All too often we hear those very words you wrote in the beginning of your post. I think so many times it's because others feel threatened by new and good ideas, others who aren't successful seem determined to thwart the success of others, for whatever reasons. And sometimes we say versions of those same things to ourselves.

Your last paragraph, especially that last sentence, is what we all need to hear and do. I know I'm going to make some changes myself this year, and I'm starting with some of the advice you wrote in that paragraph. I had a tough year last year, but I'm going to have a BETTER year this year, starting with my 'self-talk'.....TODAY.

Happy New Year!

Ann

Hi Christine and Happy New Year! Very important to think positive and start believing in a prosperous year. One of the hardest things to overcome is one's own negetive thinking. Sometimes I am my own worst enemy. It's a New Year and I am going to move forward in positive thought and over come even more than I did last year! Thanks for the post!

Christine the only way to live is in positivity. Thanks for this post, it exudes it! This is the only way to go into the New Year. Negatives such as can't, and won't, are very bad for your sales mentality!

The bad thoughts or the negative images that you provide for yourself will not help you succeed. Change the way you think, and you will change your own outcome!

Sometimes the "bad thoughts" - eg: "the RE market is bad and getting worse" - are the cold, harsh reality and "positive thinking" is just another word for denial.

You can't will this RE market healthy; it's too far gone.

Christine, OUTSTANDING post! And what a great story. I think you will do very well in the new year. I love reading stuff like this.

As Henry Ford said:

"Whether you believe you can, or believe you can't, you're right."

Great job on a great post

I love the way you think! Kinda like the little train that could... "i think I can, I think I can, I think I can..." and he did! We teach this to our kids ---

Great advice Christine. There is always a reason someone is doing well and someone else isn't. A positive attitude is always mandatory.

Thanks for the post. If there is anything you should resolve to do this year, it is to stay clear of the naysayers. Surround yourself with positive people, it will help you to stay focused!

Christine- what a powerful and positive post for the first of the year. I have always believed if you shoot for the moon, even if you just fail to reach it, you will still be in the stars. Set a goal and move towards it. When I focus on the goal, everything else becomes grey. Best wishes for 2007.

Christine----Good post. It just goes to show that we ARE what we THINK. I have a very close family member who drives me nutty because he always thinks of why something CAN'T happen rather than a way to make it happen. Can't change other people so it's best to not spend too much time with negative thinkers. Surround yourself with positive people and thoughts---that's the best medicine.

Where the hell have you been? :) You don't have to answer that. I know where you were :)

I ignore negative and bizarre people. I move forward with Broker Bryant and let the negative eat our dust. :)

Christine you go girl! I have always been rebelious enough that when someone tells me not to do something I tend to want to do it. Sometimes it gets me in trouble but for business practices it is great - have you noticed the people we work with who only like ideas when they come up with them and everything else is a bad idea. Gets my blood rollin'. Welcome back!

The power of a positve mental attitude ( PMA ) is boundless. The laws of cause and effect are in force here. For every action there is a reaction, like attracts like, karma, what goes around comes around, no matter what you call it, it is a universal principle of life. One needs to retrain how one thinks.

Great post, Christine. I always enjoy your perspective. Seems like the negativism has been much worse (not surprisingly) with the changes in the market, and people are seeking to blame others, or "the market," for issues they really should take responsibility for themselves. Good luck in the coming year!

Ya know what they say "introduce negative people to other negative people, they love to congregate and it keeps them out of the way!" (Just a little paraphrasing) I read alot (I mean ALOT) and everything I read by our succesful mentors whether they be sales people, marathon runners, physicians or religious leaders is always about focusing on the positive! See where you want to be and then get there! Thanks for the timely reminder Christine!

YES! Get out of the internal fear and just do it! We need to stop making excuses for our failure. We can still control our attitudes and outlooks even if we are going through rough times. If we believe that we can't do it, then we won't do it.

Not only do we need to stop listening to others, this also applies to ourselves sometimes. What we focus on becomes our reality, so why not focus on some fantastic results! With passion and determination, your mind will figure out a way to succeed.

If TLW is staring at your photo, something good is going on. That's a fact. This is good stuff. We're often our own worst enemies. I can often write off what others say about me, but my inner conversations are much harder to turn off. Keep this kind of stuff coming.

Jeff - LOL Thank you! I agree I am sometimes my own worst enemy. When writting and thinking of topics I always second think myself and I am my own worst critic. But, when it comes to selling and being a good person - I am good.
