Here's The Princess Again! How Do You Introduce Yourself When You Enter A Room?

By

My daughter likes to play dress up. Her favorite dress-up character is 'The Princess'. The Princess has taken to announcing herself each time she enters a room...every-time. It got me thinking today; each time we enter a room we are announcing ourselves just not verbally.

How we 'announce' ourselves speaks volumes about our character, state of mind as well as how we value ourself and others. Body language; so many subtle movements and looks are translated by those who see us enter.

  • Are you upset after a phone call and thinking about it when you run in to pick up a Starbucks? What is your body language saying to everyone in the cafe?

How we present ourselves in the Real Estate Industry is something we need to keep foremost on our mind. It's a small world and you never know where that next client will come from. Perhaps they are working at Starbucks or standing in line in front of you.

So how do you announce yourself when you enter a room?

Wow, great question!  Since my vehicle clearly announces who I am and what I do, I'm always paying attention to how I may be perceived. I think it makes me a little nicer letting people out of driveways, etc in heavily trafficed roads.

I would say that I always do try to smile, make eye contact and chit chat with people in line, etc.... what I am wearing that day often makes a huge difference to my statement when I walk into a room because it can dictate my body language.  I know when I am wearing boots and professional clothes I stand a little stronger and more commanding.  When I'm in jeans, tshirt and flip flops... the mood is very different...

Great tip. You are so correct. Business can turn up anywhere you never know. And you never know the people who the people you are working with. That is why they say the "world is a stage" because when you are out and about at work or at play you are always in the spotlight and you never get a second chance at a first impression...

Its a great question, as a former personal trainer and coach I work with clients to look and feel good.

In any case posture is so critical.  It tells most of the story.

This is a question that everyone should ask all the time. How are you presenting your self to the public?

Like Melissa, my vehicle announces who I am and it has made me more aware of how I present myself to world.  I decided to take on the persona of my youngest daughter and just say "Hi" to everyone.  It took me a while to answer the question, "What do you do?" with "I'm a decorator and home stager" instead of, "I'm a stay home mom".  Once I got over saying that, I stopped feeling like that was all I was and have started feeling more like what I am.   I believe in the saying what goes around comes around.  If you put out positives, you will get positive back.  Put out negative, and you are done for.  Besides, it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown!  Thanks for the question, Dane!

Dane - AWESOME question!  I frequently stop to look in the mirror before heading out the door even to the grocery anymore because I know the person that sees me today could be my client or affiliate tomorrow...constant reminders, eh? :)

Happy New Year To You!!!!
