Vangie, I never noticed that. I'll be interested in hearing the reason why.

Here is the answer explained very well on Ability Hub's web site

To summarize, the sensors on a mouse pad detect only human skin. There is an array of sensors and electrical conductors, ect...

Now you can sleep at night!  = )

O.K. I gotta ask...did you really try to use it with your nose??/ Now I am going to have to try it on my laptop tonight...I just hope that my wife doesn't see me. She already thinks that I am nuts as it is and that Active Rain is my other mistress...

Hey, don't knock the nose until you try it.

Gotta do something to keep posting on AR when the fingers tire out.

Okay, okay!! Let's not go beyond noses.  I am afraid to hear what some of you would try next.  Let's try not to make this a rated "R" question.  You guys are sooo funny.  But how does it (the computer) know its human skin.  Does a monkey's finder work?  How about a cows tongue?

I think its made out of alien technology.

It is the friction against it that makes it work. Mine works with a pencil eraser, but not a hard surface contacting it...

Well the eraser doesn't work on mine.

And what is capacitance?  Duh!!

So what else produces and electric charge that would work the mouse pad?

Jeff is absolutely right. They are programmed only to respond to human skin or contact.

OK, this post gets the "most unique" award in my book. I'm wondering how you ever even realized it only works with your finger?

I was fooling around with my 12 and 11 year olds and they asked the question of how the mouse works and we all starting experimenting with everying at hand.  Real Estate with Personality Baby!!!
