Laughing Is Important To Your Health

By
Real Estate Appraiser with Michael S. Bolton,Inc.

I think laughter is such an overlooked part of living a healthy life. Many focus on eating right, but don't realize that too much stress and can do more harm than eating one too many "Big Mac's." For the record, I'm a health nut, I work-out 5-6 times a week, eat lots of vegetables and fruits as well as lean meats, but I always make sure to get a dose of daily laughter. Just like anything else it's a learned behavior, but once you get in the habit it's easy to do. Here are some of the things that I do to find a good laugh:

  • Buy a couple of joke books, for a few bucks you can find some cheap but funny books on EBay.
  • Check-out the $5 DVD bin at Walmart for some old comedy movies.
  • Go to a live humorous play, or see a stand-up comedy show.
  • Read a book by a humorous author: David Sedaris, Jean Shepherd, Molly Ivins, Susan Reinhardt, etc...
  • Search YouTube for funny video clips.

There are many, many ways to add a little laughter to your daily routine, you just have to put a little effort into it, and with access to the internet it's easier than ever.

"What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul." Yiddish Proverb

To help you get started today, here's a YouTube clip of a baby laughing, which I always find contagious. This clip has been around for a while, but every time I watch it I still get a good laugh from watching it.

Laughter will cure most pain at least temporarily, I suffer from a back disorder, but laughing cures it for a short period of time, and i have heard that people like calling me because i seem so pleasant over the phone. I can laugh at the drop of a hat.

There is nothing better than a good, loud, hearty laugh. It's only topped by tears coming to your eyes because you are laughing so hard. I need those moments more often. Thank you for the reminder, Michael.

Too funny Michael! I think they need to be careful, in case she gets too good at ripping paper and doesn't look to see what she's destroying! lol

I like that Yiddish Proverb. It is very important to Laugh. Recently I've added some fun One Liners to my FB status. I try not to over due it because some people will unfriend me or hide my updates, but I try to give enough that people want more. I guess we'll see what happens. For now, its making me laugh.

Michael, I like a really good belly laugh myself.  It is cleansing and feels good. NPR has a funny radio show; Peter Sagal; Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me.  I get some good belly laughs from that show.  I watched a TV show about primate laughter; chimps and orangatans laugh like humans.  They even tickle each other and laugh.

Good for you being a health nut.  I wish I had the discipline.  My son is a health nut also and I respect him and you and all the other health nuts. They're taking care of themselves.

We've been in LA visiting our health nut son.  Also attending my uncle Jack's 94th birthday party.  He slept through half of it, but that was fine.  I saw some aunts and uncles and cousins I haven't seen for ~20 years.  The aunts and uncles who have made it are all over 85 years old.  They ask each other if their mutual friends and associates are still alive.  It's grim humor.  But everyone had a good time.   Take care.

Hey John~You'll have to let me know how that works out. I can't imagine people dis-liking you because of jokes.

Lloyd~I don't listen to NPR much, but I'm going to see if there is anything on youtube from Mr. Saga. I never knew that about primates, but it doesn't surprise me.

I first read you visited your "NUT" son, then I had to reread it, "health nut." I must be getting tired. I love getting together with family I haven't seen for a long time, especially the older folk. They have such great stories to tell. Last summer at my dad's cabin he had a bunch of the "old" retired neighborhoods over for dinner, and it was kind of odd hearing them talk about who died or was about to die. Yes, grim humor describes it well. Glad to see your back.

Have an AWESOME day!
