It’s that special time of year when we think of taxes. While you are taking some time to organize your receipts, take a moment to check the status of your Maryland Homestead Tax credit application.

                 House on St. Paul Street

Visit the Maryland Department of Taxes and Assessment website http://www.dat.state.md.us/ and look up your property under "Real Property Data Search". Once you've found your home, scroll to the bottom of the page and look for "Homestead Application Status" it's going to be the last item on the page. If you're all set it will say "approved" and list the date the approval was issued.

If you need to apply, download the "Homestead Eligibility Application" on the main page of the Maryland Department of Taxes and Assessment.

You'll be asked to verify that the real property is your single principal residence and that the address is where you as homeowner expect to file your next tax returns. You'll also be asked about the vehicles registered to this address and your voter registration status. Finally, the state will want to know if any portion of the principal residence is rented. All owners must complete this application  - everyone on the deed, no exceptions.

You may only receive this valuable credit on one principal residence. Your eligibility has nothing to do with the value of your property or your income level - it's a benefit every eligible homeowner should utilize.
