The Real Housewives of the O.C and Realty?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Tower Realty

Last night, I just could not fall asleep so I ended up watching some T.V. to help nod off. Anyway, I flipped to the station Bravo to see this show The Real Housewives of Orange County.  There was this one woman who works in Coto de Caza real estate and she was talking about her real estate practices.  She believes because she is good-looking and has a different approach to selling houses that this will make her "Top Dog".

These are some of her tricks to the trade.

  1. Call your client cheap. Never thought of it, but it could work. Maybe by insulting and bullying them they will have to give you more money.
  2. Get drunk in front of clients.  It makes sense. It loosens everyone up and everyone will have a great time discussing and buying real estate.
  3. Swear like a sailor.  Maybe I've got this image thing all wrong, but I always thought keeping it professional and classy would give you a great reputation, I guess not. What were they teaching me in realty school?
  4. Flirt with a client's significant other. I've never thought about it, but if you break up the marriage you get to sell one house and try to find them 2 different houses. Very strategic and smart, I should think about this next time.

Obliviously, I would never take any of her tips seriously.  I just thought that it wasn't interesting how some other realtors operate.  Would you want to be represented by this person if you were her client? Or if you wouldn't how would you leave? Any thoughts or comments?

Collette,

It always has seemed to me that there will always be these type of agents in our industry.  Mainly because most agents who get in the business don't come from a business background. Most are people like me who came from another career or job but weren't business people.  She makes herself look bad, but unfortunately, she also makes it hard for the rest of us.  And, although I feel beauty gets you in the door, it is knowledge and great customer service that keeps you in the room.  I hope no other agents feel that her approach is the correct one.  Living in Las Vegas and also being a Realtor for the last 10 years I can tell you that there are agents out there who view their clients this way.  Hopefully this market will rid our industry of these types of Realtors.  Keep your ethics and knowledge at their highest levels.  Good luck and good business to you.

One thing is for sure, if my wife found out I was out with her alone I would surely be looking for another place to stay.

I cringed when they showed some of her behaviors during the dinner with her clients.  Of course we only get to view a few snipets that they air so maybe there was a reason for her behaviors?
