I am so happy I could scream! Well, I did scream and yes, it is true!

The Broward County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed our No Kill Resolution today. We are thankful to all of the county's commissioners, the no kill resolution sponsor; Commissioner Chip LaMarca, Cynthia Chambers of Broward County and to Susan Pierce and Armando Linares of Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center. They all have been willing partners in reform of the TWO county open admission shelters.

Broward County is home to 1.9 million people and their companions.

RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, PERTAINING TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PROGRAM FOR BROWARD COUNTY WITH THE GOAL TO BECOME A NO KILL COMMUNITY; PROVIDING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE STRATEGIC PLAN TO IMPLEMENT LIFESAVING PROGRAMS AND SERVICES AT BROWARD COUNTY ANIMAL CARE AND ADOPTION; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY, AND AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, saving the lives of animals, identifying and eliminating animal neglect and abuse, and protecting public safety in Broward County are compatible interests; and

WHEREAS, animals should be given a chance at life through proactive adoption efforts and/or transfer to a pet placement partner or cooperating rescue group to take custody and care of the animals; and

WHEREAS, access to affordable and convenient animal behavior training and medical care is important to reducing the number of animals that are released into the community to fend for themselves; and

WHEREAS, public and private partnerships are essential to increasing the save rate of healthy, adoptable animals entering the County's Animal Care and Adoption Center; and

WHEREAS, Broward County desires to become a No Kill Community by fully developing and embracing proven lifesaving initiatives consistent with the No Kill Equation; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA:

Broward County will develop and implement a financially feasible No Kill Strategic Plan with goals and measurable objectives to include the following programs and services utilized in successful No Kill Communities across the nation, with the goal to become a No Kill Community:

Sounds good to me, now we need to find the people to adopt the pets.

Good luck and success.

How great.  I hope the wording "with the goal of becoming" doesn't mean they will continue to kill until they get everything lined up. Cause you never get everything lined up.  You just have to do it.  And the most PROVEN economical solution is low/to no cost spay neuter.

HI Patty,

This is great news for your area.

I already had two rescue dogs and when I found a poor little puppy almost dead and underweight, I knew if I called Animal Control that she would be a goner so I took her home, cleaned her up, took her to the vet and now 1.5 years later she is my wonderful 3rd dog Gidget. There are a few  places that are no-kill but with the foreclosure problem, we just have so many abandoned animals so unless it goes to a special rescue group like PAWS, they only have 4 days for cats and 10 days for dogs. Sad but true.

Lou, you are so right. The NO KILL model has specific, proven strategy so we can reach that goal, part of it is increase in adoptions, fostering and big attention needs to be paid to birth control by providing no or low cost spay/neuter. No birth = no death.

Leslie - I know what you mean but we are going to stay strong and keep the pressure on. I am SO thrilled that we have gotten the commissions to make this public commitment so we can get the community involvement.

Kristin - you did the right thing - I am sure your doggie is so thankful. It really bugs me that cats are treated as inferior to gods, I love ALL animals because life is precious. San Fran become no-kill, I hope the rest of Cali follows.

Jane - I am beyond myself. I did not work directly on this - an amazing woman called Debi Day is the person who deserves all the credit. www.nokilladvocacycenter.org

Sally - I cant wait for this goal to become a reality!

This is great news! I don't know how anyone could kill a healthy dog or cat for that matter.

Howdy and afternoon Patty

Patty my friend, Congrats to y'all! this sure is a mighty fine thing which the Commissioners of Broward County did by passing the No Kill Resolution.

Its sure not Kitty Cats, Puppy Dogs, Bunnies and other animals fault that folks took them in to their home and  the folks then decided that they did not really want to take care of them.

Have a good one

Yvonne, I don't know how the shelters can do what they do but they DO IT and it not acceptable. Killing a healthy animal is murder and should not be tolerated. I am glad my county is moving in the right direction and I hope other counties will follow. We must become a NO-KILL Nation.

Kathleen, that was my reaction! Well.. maybe louder cause I really did scream. So happy they are going for it, now we need the community's involvement and some funds.

Dale, you are right on. The animals are innocent victims of reckless human behavior and sadly, they end up paying the ultimate price. I am so happy that my commissioners voted this way and and hope the goal is reached very soon.

Patty, in light of all the hoopla that has been spotlighted in Broward County as-of-late, it's good to actually have it be for the POSITIVE, and not about "killing". I am thrilled.
