our chocolate labWe have had Zeke, our Chocolate Lab, for four years and he is definitely a member of our family.  Growing up we always had animals. Never had to buy them as they just seemed to appear at our house.  Perhaps because of all the eleven kids plus all the neighborhood children seem to stay at our house.  But, to the point, dogs were never allowed in the house.

Anyway, my very first dog was Geo was a Tibetan Terrier, black and white, and was adorable.  We were lucky enough to adopt Geo from the Arlington, VA pound.  Geo was the first dog ever allowed in my house.  As I was known as a clean freak, my family was surprised that I allowed a dog to stay inside.  Well, we had Geo for seven years and he died of cancer.... broke my heart!

Years later, I retired from the Federal Government and we moved to Lewisburg, WV, and I started my real estate career again with Coldwell Banker.  September 2009, I listed one of my neighbors house and they had a chocolate lab...Zeke!

One day Mr. Seller says to me, "Rebecca do you want a dog".  He said, “I go to work very early and work late every night and my wife has bad knees and can not walk Zeke”.  Although they had a dog fence, and had a doggie dog in the garage .... Zeke was eating the roots of their bushes and trees.  He was lonely and wanted to be walked.   I immediately said no because I did not want a BIG dog in my newly built home.

our chocolate lab

When I got home that evening I told my my husband, Claude, about Zeke. Goodness he was so excited and said,  “Rebecca, call the sellers and say yes we want the chocolate lab.”  He has always wanted a chocolate lab.  So, I called and they were so delighted and knew Zeke would be well cared for and have a good home.

Mr. seller brings Zeke the next day, his cage, dog leash, toys, food, and papers.  At first, we kept Zeke in his cage and walked him every day and played “catch” in our big yard.  As time went on, Zeke stayed in the house more and more with us..... as he is just a joy to have around.

Jump to December, the winter was so cold and we did not want to leave Zeke in the garage.  Well, Zeke was an inside dog from then on.  We have a bed inside the house and out in the garage as well.  Zeke is always following me around the house....my husband just laughs at him.  But, I love it.  Zeke is an incredible dog, and has a gentle and affectionate nature.  He is intelligent, keen, friendly and biddable with a strong will to please.

At the time we got Zeke, I didn’t know that Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog breeds.  The Labrador has a need to please, which indicates why this dog breed can be regarded as the ultimate family dog. The face of a Labrador evokes the most adoration, perhaps more specifically his ability to express his love of life, understanding and affection through a gentle look or delicate movement.

So that is how we got our beloved chocolate lab, Zeke!

If you are thinking about getting a dog, here is what you should know about Labrador Retrievers:

  • Makes a wonderful family pet and excellent with children;
  • A good choice for novice owners;
  • Acclimates well to most climates;
  • Does not require trimming;
  • Very little grooming required ( although we brush Zeke weekly),
  • Easy to train,
  • almost forgot.... they are just darn lovable!

Great story. We had several stray labs over the years. Thanks to people 'return the dog to the wild', in other words dumping them out in the country. They were always super friendly and great to have around.

we have a female black lab, although my vet says she's also got some setter in her... she's a bit shaggy.  She literally wandered to  our lives.  I've only had doggies in the house 4 years myself.  Wouldn't dare put them back outside now though.

Hi Rebecca,

Zeke sounds like a wonderful pet and is so handsome. Zeke was lucky to find such a wonderful family but you all were lucky to find him as well. Thanks for sharing such a nice story.

Great story Rebecca, I agree that Labs are the best family dogs. We have 2 and one grew up with the boys tugging on his tail, hugging him too tight and playing in the yard for hours on end! He is a senior now and still wants to play and thinks he is a lap dog!

Elite Homes, 3 chocolate dachshunds...you have your hands fur full :)

Gayle, you are so right... the cleaning is worth it!

Carla, 2 doberman pups... good for you. I would love to have another lab for Zeke to have a playmate.

Rebecca, what a great story, and Zeke is a beautiful chocolate lab.    I laughed when you said he follows you around the house -- what a cute pup!

Sharon, sorry to hear of your loss and I know you miss your chocolate lab.

Roger, yes I forgot about the contest, I never did find out who won...it wasn't Zeke.

Debbie, two cats from a customer...okay but I must say one dog is enough for me right now...although I would like for Zeke to have a playmate.

Wallace, that is a good way to get animals... from military families moving to another state/country.

Dorie, thank you!

Mona, funny you ask as I am checking for my brother as he wants a dog like Zeke.  We do not have a Lab Rescue and not sure  if labs show up at the pound very often... but checking on this!

Rebecca, I would agree that Labaradors are great family dogs, but I must add Shelties to the list. Our Otto has all the characteristics of Zeke - except he is much more complicated to groom :)

Rebecca, I've seen or read several blog posts lately about dogs or pets.  I had two dalmatian brothers a few years ago...not with me anymore, but I really miss them.  I work so many hours that it's hard to justify getting another...all the pet posts are making it difficult not to get another dog.  Zeke is a great looking dog.

Rebecca my friend, Labradors sure are mighty fine family members! Zeke sure is a mighty good looking little ole puppy dog! His eyes sure do show that he loves his family.

Sheila, thank you and yes he has found his forever home...although my brother would like to have him :)

Than, sad people just dump their dog off a road, and leaves the dog to find a new owner... so sad.  We had stray dogs when I was growing up...they were all great dogs.

Tammy, I know...I would never put Zeke outside or in the garage.

Kristin, thank you I agree we all are lucky!

Wanda, it is so funny these big labs thinking they are lap dogs :)

Joan, he follows me around ALL the time...can be a nuisance when I am really busy. :)
