With the new movie coming up about September 11th I started to wonder how many of us actually have a Disaster Plan.   September 11th hit very close to home for me - I worked in the Twin Towers on and off as a consultant for many years.  I wasn't there that day, but it had a profound affect on my life and career.  Disaster planning to me then was where is the latest backup and I am out of here.  Never really thought about massive distruction again.

That was until last year and Hurricane Wilma.  Last year I realized that it is very important to have a Disaster plan.  We were lucky we took a direct hit of a Category 3 hurricane and we back to business the next day.

Having a current, updated will is good planning too along with a durable power of attorney for health care and a living will in addition to the regular one.

Having recently lost both my parents as well as my wife's parents we have become even stronger believer's in being prepared for the very worst.

If I ever become unable to make my own decision concerning my long term health care I will be secure in the knowledge that I have already made those decisions for those that will need to carry them out.

One of the best disaster planing tips I've heard is to designate a relative or close family friend who lives out of state as a contact point in the event of a disaster. Communication is the first thing to  break down in a disaster as the phone systems (both land and wireless) can be damaged or overloaded. Even so, it is usually easier to phone out of a disaster area than in. If family members who are separated in the disaster area are able to contact a designated person outside the area, it is much easier to pass information and locate each other.

We don't need a plan - we always can count on you!  Actually Colleen you bring up some great points...  Guess I will be making copies of important documents tomorrow and mailing them to our daughter!
