Many Realtors get caught up in the focus of search engine optimization to make their pages number one. They hire companies for hundreds of dollars per month to make them on page one for certain search terms. Do you want to be on page one.  I know of a SEO place that will get the same results as the big boys in real estate for half the price. Sounds too good to be true? It isn't (E-mail me). Every state has one or two, but the key site everyone is using is Google. For those new to the SEO business Google uses a complex algorithym to determine the page number and spot of your web page. There are a few tips that agents can use to help optimize their websites.

1.  Hold onto your site for a long time.  Google likes websites that are established.

2.  Frequently update your site.  Add new pertinent information. In that information add key words and phrases.

3. Add RSS feeds. Blogging is looked highly upon, so establish RSS feeds from your site to Active Rain and other companies. It also updates your website.

4. Add backlinks to highly rated websites. By doing that you help improve your visibility for the Spiders to come get your information. By the way, the spiders are so complex they can see white text on a white background, which will decrease your ranking on Google.

Just by following these hints, you can optimize a little on your own without having to acquire an expensive SEO company, or find one that is inexpensive, but above all else, make sure that they know what they are doing.

Matthew, Thanks for the post. I've been using SEO for about 6 weeks now and have seen tremendous results. My blogs haves also produced first page ranking (Especially Active Rain) I would love to research the site your referring to, if it would save me money on Google, Yahoo and ASK. Please email it to me. Thanks,  "Expect the Best" Mike

Good information to know.  I find it really interesting that a Realtor here locally spends thousands of $$'s to have his website on the front and my company has been teaching us the same things that you mention. By doing what you are saying and some other non-expensive things, it has worked our website to the front. And we haven't thrown as much money as the other Realtor has for sure. Good stuff.

I struggle with it as well.  My wife just happens to be good at this sort of thing.

Both my AR blog and my business blog were on Page 1 of Google for a while and now they are not.  Either others are using better SEO strategies or I've slowed down in posting content.  Not sure which it is.

It could also be that the sites you are linked to have dropped, as well. You need to make substantial changes to the site for them to consider it updated, not just add a sentence or two, as well.

Just by blogging here on AR if you title your posts the right way and put the right links into it (like links to your website) you will be surprised how high you can rank without paying anyone!

You get my point, Michael. It is ironic, since I posted this blog I have gotten bombarded by calls from SEO people promising to take my site to page 1. When I asked where they got my name they tell me from the Internet, but yet they can't find me in Modesto Real Estate. Go figure! But yet they found me, how?

If I signed on to all the places that promise me page one on google I would be there forever or I would be very poor.  I vote for the second option.

Good point Gene.   I was thinking how can companies make such promises, when they can't possibly deliver that to everyone.

Dear Matthew,

Thank you for a very informational post.  I would love to put the bookmark and the rss feed on my website, but so far no one seems to know how to do it.  Any words of advice?
