Regarding the Dec. 2 Press Enterprise Article

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty Executives

Its been more than two weeks since the Press Enterprise wrote a special report that made the front page of the Sunday paper, but I've been anxious to respond to the ludacris hype that was passed for newsworthy work.  The title says: Some Temecula City Council members profit from ties with southwest Riverside County developers, Cashing In On Growth by David Danelski.  The article is on the front page of the Sunday paper and when you open the paper up it continues on three other pages.  The title at the top of the inside pages reads: "Unusual Situation" and Public, Private Concerns in super large text font.

I was completely appalled by this article.  I barely got through the first part of the article because it basically states and then repeats various connections of city council members to Dan Stephenson, owner of Rancon Real Estate Corporation.  The third paragraph of the article quotes Peter Thorson, Temecula city attorney as saying "none of the coucilmen has violated conflict of interest laws."  You wouldn't be able to tell that was the case by the headlines and the tone of the rest of the article.  It sounds very much to me like these council members and Mr. Stephenson are being charged guilty by association.

Of course, a wise person once asked me if I would roll over and die if I read my own obituary in the paper too.

Who cares if Jeff Comerchero was facing foreclosure in 1998.  Poor guy.  A lot of people have been in that situation.  Mr. Danelski, you state this fact twice as if stating it the second time is going to make his well being directly connected to the alleged "inappropriate" action.  And I personally work with Ron Roberts, Jr.  One of the nicest, hardest working guys I've met.  To insinuate that there is inappropriate relationships here because of his father is ridiculous.  I bet his clients were shaking their heads when they read the mess which you called the Sunday paper too.  The rest of the connections that were pointed out clearly were about Temecula City Council members and the business they do outside of Temecula.  Again, you point out Peter Thorson, attorney who says no wrong doing has been done and any conflict of interest laws are being followed.  These mountains are really mole hills when you get down and look at them.

Its no secret that the Dominegoni Family and Al Rattan are the evil forces behind the article.  Somebody got their nose out of joint and a reporter smelled a juicy story to spin and voila.  Instant Sunday paper fodder.  Its funny though because you couldn't pick on a brighter protanganist that Dan Stephenson.  He's the Luke Skywalker of Temecula Valley.  His jedi mastery of "the force" has given him enough light to fill the whole valley.  You can see the it everywhere you go - just try walking by the Old Town Temecula Theater generously subsidized by Dan and Beverly Stephenson, or go the the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival where the top prize is named after said benefactor.  Funny thing that you may not know about these things is that the man doesn't do these things to put into a press release and have it flashed across the news.  He does these things because he continues to give back to his community.  This is the way its always been for him.

Dan Stephenson is a man that I very much respect.  Funny thing, I think a lot of people in the valley who know him or of his work respect him too.  I can only imagine the backlash of letters to the editor that you must have received for such a piece of work as this article on the front page of the Sunday paper.  Was it a coincidence Rancon Real Estate recently pulled much of its print advertising budget to put it into a large Realtor.com advertising campaign?  Yes, believe it Press Enterprise.  Rancon just spent a huge amount of money on internet advertising when other companies are shutting doors, firing agents and managers, and cutting back in all ways possible.  After this slanderous article, I wouldn't blame them for pulling their advertising in the Press Enterprise completely.

Courage of the press
My congratulations to The Press Enterprise for publishing the series of articles that look into Temecula City Government and very suspicious ties to Deverlopers, including Rancon. It took courage not to be rolled by the power of the developers.    Reading Susan Mannings reply to the articles make me a little dizzy. The logic brought forward in Susan Mannings rebuttle was spoken like somebody with a personal axe to grind.  I also noticed a veiled threat in her comment about pulling all real estate ads from the Press Enterprise.  I wonder if Ms Manning works for anyone else other than Rancon?

Dear Courage:  Thank you for reading my opinion and responding.  I find it interesting that you needed "courage" to write the response and then didn't leave a name.  And in response to the so called "threat" about pulling the ads from the Press Enterprise, it wasn't a threat.  Advertising IS being pulled from the Press.  Not only is the Press Enterprise an ineffective way to advertise compared to the internet, local brokers and the real estate busines are being dredged through the black and white dirt of so called news every week.  No, Rancon isn't the only unfortunate target.  And real estate is not the only example of how the papers try to hype an article as "negative" and "suspicious" through the headline when really its just a bunch of useless information and gossip.  And just to let you know, I consider myself an entreprenuer and independent.  Real estate is my full time profession, but I still do work in the entertainment field, health and wellness, and volunteer work.  I chose real estate as a career so I could have the flexibility to do my work as I see best.  I chose to work for Rancon because it is a company of integrity.  Thank you again for your time reading my response.  I'm happy to respond to any other serious questions you may have.  SM

Hello, I sent you an email regarding your article on the Press enterpise. Did you receive it? I stated that I support the Press Enterpise in publishing the article about the City Council of Temecula. You seem to feel that Rancon, Dan Stephenson, and the City Council are above reproach and that somhow a newpaper should not be questioning the relationship between all of them.  For Rancon to threaten and then remove advertising from the Press Enterprise because of that article is showing an arrogance that I find dsturbing. We have FREEDOM OF THE PRESS in this country. The press is  the "watchdog" of a free nation. I hope that they continue to inform the citizens of Temecula about the actions of the city council and their relationship to Dan Stepenson and Rancon. I am not pointing my fingers at anyone. I just want to have the right to be presented  information and make my decision based on that information.

As a resident of Wildomar I find these types of issues worth investigating. We are on track to becoming a city and I want to make sure that any corruption is extracted from Wildomar before it has an opportunity to root itself.

Any truth can easily stand up to the most intense muckraking... It tends to make the good in people look that much brighter, so I would not be surprised if the "victim" of the article was involved with it. Knowing of the extent of the backlash and positive support he would receive.

All public officials should be able to live up to the scrutiny that their constituents voice. Nothing is gospel. ("public officials" and "constituents" can be replaced with the word "people")

I feel that the majority of public officials are motivated by selfishness (not necessarily bad) and they should welcome criticism with open arms. The ones that don't welcome criticism are probably embezzling the city's budget at every opportunity to feed some unfulfilled desire.

Thanks for your opinion Ryan.  Points well taken.

In truth, Mr. Stephenson, owner of Rancon Real Estate Corporation, knew the article was coming out and had forewarned us at our annual goals seminar he leads that there was probably going to be some negative press about him coming up.  I certainly do not think that Mr. Stephenson is a victim in any way.  And I do not think that he wanted the article to appear in the light that it did.  I find it upsetting that the press sensationalized the situation to create an atmosphere of conspiracy when it was quite obvious to those in the know that this was not the case.  Did you see the article?  I still have a copy of it.  I'm sure you could easily deduce that much of the information in it is extemporaneous at best.

My point was that maybe the general reader may or may not know the integrity of Mr. Stephenson who is not a public official in any regard.  He certainly is an successful entreprenuer whom I very much respect though.  There can be a thin line one treads when they are successful and under scrutiny of the public.  Integrity cannot be divided, and my point was that I see Mr. Stephenson as someone who shows this in all aspects of his life.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. The article contain facts and those facts did not point to any wrong doing. It pointed out that it appears no laws have been broken. It also pointed out the Mr. Stephenson is a very smart man and uses his money to manipulate things in his favor. Thats how people become rich, stay rich, and continue to amass great fortunes. His money gives him the power to influence. Again he is very smart, thats why he puts people in place in city government. He can manipulate them without even having to say anything, after all they are in his employ. One wrong move and that employment could end, just as if I made a decision which had a negative impact on my employer. We can all see from the article and the comments posted that Mr. Stephenson and the city Council are very ethical. We should all feel lucky to have them directing the city. I read the article and did find it negative at all.
