Smoke Detector's: When to Replace?|League City, TX 77573|Marilyn Wier 713-542-8451

We have all been there, the fire alarm is making that frequent beeping noise and it's in the middle of the night. You drag a chair or a ladder over to the alarm and pull it down. You realize after you have disconnected it, it is still beeping! Next thing you know you have placed it under pillows in a guest bedroom and have forgotten about it.

Most smoke detectors have about five to seven years life span and after that, it’s pretty much anyone’s guess if they are working or not. In some cases the alarm will beep when the battery life is dying but if the smoke detector is dying you may never know. If you can’t remember the last time you replaced your smoke detectors it’s probably time to replace them. The good news is that the newer smoke detectors are tied directly to the electrical systems in the home. In older homes, if the parts and pieces are yellow, dirty and broken, and the door does not shut it’s time to replace.

There are a few key places to always have a smoke detector. Some places are pretty apparent but other places may not be so apparent.

The place most people forget and ignore is the attic. With all the electrical lines in the attic it is very important to place a smoke detector above the opening of the staircase leading to the attic; This way you can hear it if it were to go off.

Make sure ALL bedrooms have a smoke detector. Fires can happen at any time and if the family is asleep they may not be aware that the home is on fire until it is too late.

Be sure that there is a smoke detector in all living areas. The one area you do not need a smoke detector is in the kitchen since cooking can set off a warning signal that isn’t needed.

If you are not sure how old your smoke detectors are it may be time to replace. This small task can save lives.

If you are buying or selling be sure to take a look at the smoke detectors and make sure they are working. Give me a call and I can help you with all your real estate needs!
