Shell Island or Shell Key in Pinellas County Florida has long been a boating destination. Weekends the small island has boats anchored all around the island. Some people camp out on the island, or stay on their boats. Partying is the goal of most of the boaters. Many bring their dogs.

People concerned about the environment - Shell Island is a preserve - see fewer and fewer places that protect birds and wildlife, and don't want these destroyed by people.

Some boaters and partiers are responsible. A few aren't, and leave a mess behind.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has banned alcohol and dogs, effective immediately.

Booo!  We had something similar happen to an island by Lover's Key a few years ago. I miss the good times we use to have there.

Hey Sharon, the link out isn't working. I think the url is from when you were logged in to the blog. 401 error.

Sharon - It is a shame that people don't pick up after themselves and leave a mess behind.  They end up ruining it for everyone else.  These areas need to be protected...they are dissapearing quickly!

Chris - a lot of people have had a lot of fun on Shell Island.  It's a shame that a few spoil things for the many.

Chris - you're exactly right! That's what was wrong and I've fixed the link. That's the second time it's happened so now I'll remember to get out of blogging before I click the link.  "public" was missing in the URL. Thanks for pointing it out.

Sal - yes, it's such a shame that we can't co-exist. If everyone were responsible, we could.

Sharon, oh, no!  Were those bad doggies leaving their beer cans behind or something?

And Chris, good times on Lovers' Key?  Hmmm.

Katerina - there should be a lot more enforcement on the waterways for boat DUI.

Patricia - beer cans, trash, dog and human feces, garbage, you name it, it was left.

There are laws to deal with trash, dog owners and alcohol.  The Tierra Verde condo owners are the real reason why decent, law abiding boat owners can't go to Shell Key anymore.  They have been pushing the Audobon Society, the Sierra Club and Pinellas County into transforming their view to the Gulf into a boat free view.  Look at what happened to the  piece of land west of Billy's, less than a 75 feet away from Shell Key.  It has been FLATTENED to make room for more condos.  If you think that there are ecologiacl reasons for the changes, you have been fooled!
