South Florida’s Panera Bread and the Dan Marino Foundation Shed Light on National Autism Awareness Month.
April is National Autism Awareness Month and now more than ever there is a need to learn more about this disorder. It was reported just last week that autism is on the rise and that 1 in 88 children are affected. That’s a 23% rise in the last 2 years. Is this due to better diagnosis? Environmental? We don’t know yet.
This month at 33 Panera Breads in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties will be selling exclusive football cookies in Dolphin colors. $1.00 from every cookie sold will go to the Dan Marino’s Vocational College. The college, which is supposed to open in the Fall of 2014 will provide vocational and academic classes for young people 18-28 with disabilities.
You can find your closest Panera Bread at the Panera site.
Good morning Kathy,
South Florida's Panerea Bread company is to be congratuatled for stepping to the post. There $1 per cookie they sell can go a long way to helping the Dan Mairno Vocational College.
Morning Kathy sounds like a great idea now if only every restaurant would participate. Hope all is going well and enjoy the day
What a great community project for the Dophins FOR SUCH A good cause ... and I agree with James (2) that it would be a wonderful thing for other restaurants to participate ... or at least Panera do it nationwide....
I knew I loved Panera's Chicken Caesar salad! Good for them-autism is on the rise for a number of reasons and I know from personal experience how difficult it can be for a family.
Good to put this out and let people know! Panera will be busy from all the added support and publicity.
Kathy good for you getting the word out about Panera helping not only helping Autism financially but bringing it to the public's attention! Autism is real and effects many more families that we realize.
Good Morning Kathy, it is real nice of you to promote this. I wish our Panera breas was doing that as well here. Autism hits many families that i interact with and it is so import to support the cause.
Outstanding work by Penera and Dan Marino's foundation. Congratulations on their commitment to such an important issue to may be able to help, going forward.
Thank you for sharing the post with all of us.
Dorie- heading there tomorrow! What an easy way to help.
James- wouldn't that be wonderful. Every little bit helps.
Marianne- I agree... I was surprised that it was just the Panera's here.
BARFF- I love it and we're in Panera at least twice a week.
Joanna- I love Panera...all of their soups. One of my first patients when I was in grad school had autism and yes.. it is hard for the family.
Janis- I'd love to see the Vocational school when it's built.
John- so right. And the increase in just the last two years is alarming. Can you believe- one out of every 88 children!
Scott- I think the article that came out a few weeks ago sent alarms to everyone.
Joe- I just hope that more people will learn about Autism and how it affects so many families.
An amazing and frightening statistic, to be sure, Kathy. My step-son is autistic, and I have some strong beliefs on why it's increasing. Thanks for the post!
