Wounded Duct – Corrections Needed!

Be responsible for your actions.

Mistakes can happen in the repair, remodel, and restoration of a building. It can happen to contractors, homeowners, flippers, and handymen; accidents do happen. I saw some things today that caught my eye; some mistakes in construction that should have been corrected.

While demolishing a bathroom floor, I discovered that the exhaust vent from the kitchen runs under the bathroom floor. The size of the vent pipe does not leave much room between the bathroom subflooring and the drywall ceiling in the kitchen below. This isn’t a problem if everyone is careful, but someone was not.  J

vent cut holes in floor

The bathroom floor had been patched previous to our removing it today. Once the floor was opened I noticed a couple of things that needed attention. It looks as though the exhaust vent was cut with a saw during the original demolition. I’m sure that the depth of the saw blade nipped it accidentally, but the real problem is that it was not repaired before putting down the new flooring. It may not be a big deal but air from the exhaust fan was getting into the joist area.

Also on this same vent tube was a hole, probably from a nail. This is very minor and if the nail was still in the hole, very little air flow would have passed through. I do find it humorous how far from the joist the nail was placed. It wasn’t even close to the wood framing, and this was probably from the original construction.

We all make mistakes from time to time, we are human. What is important is that we correct the problems that we know about and are responsible for. This probably applies to many aspects of our lives.

It is important to correct problems that we are responsible for and sometimes for those we are not.

This probably applies to many aspects of our lives.

There has been a cultural shift in my eyes that went from "nobody's perfect" to you had better not "screw up".

Thanks for posting this and reminding us that mistakes do happen.  It's a good life.

There does seem to be a shift in how we do things, and how we treat each other Joe.
