23 Comments on Red Light Cameras - Does Your Ciy Have Them?
I guess the pay back gtd is their marketing tool. Red light cameras and they get you from the air I know in FL as well. I guess I will leave the Lamborghini home when driving in FL
Hi Carol. Big brother at work. Sounds like a real money maker for the company.
Hi Carol,
In theory it is to prevent accidents and promote safety.
I think it is a huge windfall for the camera company, and just one more tax forced upon the people without our consent.
Phil
Morning Ms. Carol they tried that one here in Arkansas but had to take them down. The citations were mailed to the owner of the vehicle. One owner stated he/she wasn't driving the vehicle at the time of the infraction and therefore if the citation cited one person when there was a possibility of another one driving the citation should be voided. The court upheld their version stating unless the State could prove who was driving the vehicle the citation was not valid.
Hi Carol-wow all you ever read about is how much they bring in but this is the first time i hear how much they cost! Sounds staggeringly expensive cause we sure have a lot of them down here!
One obvious benefit I have noticed though is people are NOT going through the light change like they used too.
Michael: I'm kind of amazed WE can afford them, frankly. But yes, drivers need to pay attention to the rules of the road.
Roger: Neither do I. I know Orlando has them, as I got a ticket for jumping a toll booth (only had $20 bills, and it was unmanned)....
Adrian: interesting....not sure what our volume will be, but I'm sure we'll read about it in a year or so.
Charlie: Good move to leave the Lambo at home!
Conrad: I agree!
Phil: I agree, the camera company seems to be the money maker here.
James: I'll be curious to see what happens here...
Marco: I'm sure it will have some impact, but I agree, I had no idea the cost was $4K per month per camera!
I'm a little surprised that Google isn't involved....................or are they?
I think we are all in the wrong business. Why should any of us be surprised with any of these types of stories?
Thank you for sharing the post with all of us.
We have them in SW Florida also. Tons of controversy over cost and ROI (rate of return). If they actually reduce number of accidents, then no price is too high. But I have not seen statistics that prove or disprove that theory. Now I have concerns about the Goodyear Blimp flying over. Are they watching the game or......just sayin'.
Hi Carol - We've had them for years - and a few of ours are mobile. They operate out of the backs of SUV's and pick-up trucks with shells, but they tend to always leave them in the same dozen or so locations. We've become pretty good at spotting them - but I've still been tagged a couple of times.
Ron: I bet Google is involved in some way!
Joe: Technology is great, but the cost of this is surprising to me.
Mike: I'm pretty sure there will be a LOT of negative exposure here regarding these cameras.
Dick: Interesting, I was not aware there was a mobile type too.
Carol- I like some of the others am amazed at how much they are. Hasn't anyone heard of volume discount! If it helps to stop our drivers who race through red lights that would be nice but $4,000 a pop is a lot.
Good morning Carol,
I amazed at how pricey they are..I'm with Kathy..isn't their a volume discount? Sounds like a company who should be doing well!!
Hi Carol, we've had them for years, and I hate them. In fact, there is a small niche that has grown around this business that will give suggestions on how to 'beat' a red light camera. I have heard that once having had these cameras, some cities are opting out of them as the revenue does not add up.
Kathy: I know! That is $100K PER MONTH! But, if it enforces better driving, maybe it is worth it.
Dorie: I think I might consider stock in the company making and selling these cameras!
Joy: I'll be curious to see if we find out which lights/intersections they'll be installed at.
Sandy: I've read that to, in replies to my blog.
Carol,
This is no laughing matter. Does privacy really exist? Geese! The cost! The purpose? And yet criminals are still getting away with things. Something is wrong with this picture... oh wait, I mean with these cameras and local government too!!!
Patricia
Millions of dollars of revenue are generated by traffic cameras. Drivers need to be very careful in Maryland. A drive across town could generate several tickets for the careless driver.
Hi Carol,
We had red light cameras for about 2-3 years in San Bernardino county but they have all been removed now. The cities had to pay all the fees and never recouped enough to even break even. It is amazing to think the fine is $400 if the violator pays it immediately but if they go to court and make payments, the fees end up around $1500. Most of the monies go to the courts and the county and very little to the cities so they have now all been removed.
Another interesting finding was that they seemed to cause more fender benders since people would drag their brake and slow down in the intersections and cars behind them would hit them not realizing they were slowing down.
I for one am glad they are gone.
