Why Living in the San Francisco area is so great - Reason #9--City Hikes!

Some people are surprised that as empty nesters my husband and I chose to move to San Francisco, especially when we both work on the Peninsula. After all, they reason, you like to hike. Well, that's perhaps one of the reasons we did move to San Francisco -- hiking in San Francisco is wonderful.

San Francisco hill hike

For example, last Monday I wrapped up work at 4:30, and headed out for a fast-paced 90 minute walk. After being at my computer all day, I wanted the challenge of some hills and staircases, along with the fantastic vistas.

Coit TowerMy route turned out to be about 4.3 miles, but what the map doesn't show is the terrain!

  • I started UP to the top of Lafayette Park, along the crest of the hill, DOWN to Cow Hollow, ACROSS Van Ness and UP to the very peak of Russian Hill.
  • A two-block long staircase took me DOWN to North Beach, ACROSS Columbus Avenue, and UP to Coit Tower at the top of Telegraph Hill.
  • Another staircase took me DOWN to the spot where I usually see a few (or lots!) of the "wild parrots of Telegraph Hill," then another set of stairs DOWN to Green Street, through Chinatown and North Beach.
  • Back UP I went, "enjoying" the killer stairs on Vallejo Street to the top of Russian Hill, and then a gentle downslope back home.

I came home happy, hungry, and feeling healthy. Hiking in San Francisco is fantastic!

City living, at its best! Are you ready to find your spot?

Lottie,  Those are very nice views ... certainly different views than what we typically see on one of your hikes!  San Francisco is a lifestyle ... and you are now living it!  Congratulations.

Great post Lottie.  I have done a little bit of hiking in The City this year and look forward to doing some more.  San Fancisco is a beautiful city.

That is a great route to hike up to Coit Tower and see the views below. I remember doing that when I was living in SF.

Morning Lottie I'm tired just reading your post.  I have lost so much muscle mass when I lost the weight I had to get a set of dumbbells and I work out every other day.

Kathleen, you're right about San Francisco being a lifestyle. We're enjoying it to the hilt.

Jim, maybe you can combine a hike with a ballgame -- and possibly turn into an SF Giants fan????

Jennifer, I know you enjoyed your life here--and I'm sure NYC suits you equally well. Come back and visit!

James, you're doing all the right things, so keep it up!

You should take Jerry Rice along with you! He loves running the hills on the Peninsula. I bet he would like running your route also!

Phil, I know Jerry Rice runs our Peninsula trails--I always hope I'll see him. And I'd love to hike our city hills with him--he was always my favorite player to watch--a great blend of grace, power and athleticism.
