Solid Geometry - Area Of A Cabinet = Pi Times Plumbing Squared

By

For some reason, when I took solid geometry in school, one day the formulas for figuring out the area of an object just clicked.

And it has helped me!  When doing energy audits, one of the things I have to do is figure out the area of all the rooms so I can calculate the area of the house needing to be environmentally controlled.

Wow, you mean high school math has helped me?  Yes!

Who knew that would ever happen?

So, imagine my joy when it came to determining if this cabinet is large enough for the plumbing?

Or was it determining if the plumbing fit the cabinet?

I can't remember which it is, but at least I know the formula:

Area of a Cabinet = Pi x Plumbing Squared

My geometry teacher would be proud.

What you don't realize is this - taken all together, the cabinet, plumbing, placement of the stuff inside, length of tubing, etc., is another proof for the Pythagorean Theorem.

Look carefully and you can actually see that A squared + B squared = C squared.  The pretty colors might help you.

If you don't, well, think about it.  Or trust me.  Really.  It's there...  (the twinkle in my eye at this moment cannot convey here, but it's a' twinklin'!)

This was an incredibly fun inspection!  There was so much homeowner plumbing in this house it truly made it fun.

There is so much wrong with this picture it is not funny, to go with the popular idiom!  And beside that, there are two plumbing clean out ports in this house.  The other one is here.  This one is behind this wall and cabinet and totally inaccessible unless you rip the cabinet out.  You can actually see this one by peeking inside a closet fifteen feet away where there is a small gap between the framing and foundation wall.

My recommendation:  this inspection was for a renter who was considering buying the house.  I figured between $80 and $90K to make this house right.  And I could be way low!  The house has been rented for some time and "fixed up" piece by piece by the homeowner.  IF YOU HAVE A CLIENT RENTING AND CONSIDERING BUYING THE HOUSE, GET A HOME INSPECTION!  If you don't you might be the square.

If all the work history of this home is like the photo, there are many issues. If the tenant considers the property, the price would have to be, really right.

Thank you for sharing the post with all of us.

The homeowner wants top dollar Joe.  And the renter knew there were issues, but until my inspection had no idea how many!

Good morning Joe,

You have restored my faith in my teachers who assured me that not only would I use geometry, but that trigonometry course I took would be useful in the future too...I may have to track them down and let them know!

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Easter!

Thanks Lisa.  How funny that I can actually use my math for good!

Happy Easter to you too.  It is the most important Christian holiday of the year.

Yes, Michael, in so many ways!  But hey, that formula works, right?

Good morning Jay;  I don't hear too much about the Pythagorean Theorem anymore, but I did use it in 1971 when I ordered shingles for my roof.  BTW, the colors in the picture sure are pretty.

Morning Jay I like your last little comment (if you don't you may be square).  I'm very familiar with the right triangle theorem as I use it when reconstructing accidents works wonderfully

I liked geometry. It has helped me in many ways. The orange glue is a great visual aid.

Looks like more "flattenyourfloe" to me Jay---be that fire-supression system pipe glue?

I always liked it too Jim, especially after those formulas, and finding areas clicked.  My geometry teacher was also the wrestling coach, having been an AAU champ in college.  So we thought he was pretty cool.

Charlie - I had never seen that before on PVC.  It does look like the orange stuff on sprinkler tubing.  But I didn't lick it to see if it tasted like tangerine marmelade.  That would have proved it I guess.

Jay, why mess with a silly P trap when you can just have a big U trap, or is that 'A Bigga U Trap'. And I agree completely that if a renter is thinking of buying the house do the inspection before they even sign the lease

Ed - I think bigga must be betta.  Does water go through it like a hot knife throughy butta?

I think that's sound advice.  Gotta go - making some cake batta.  Sweet, not bitta.

Ya gotta love landlord/ladies who make the house sound like the deal of the century....and take advantage of the tenant who may have formed some "bond" with the property...to find that the bond on the inside is not quite so strong !

This renter is pretty smart S&D, owning two homes in Florida.  He was trying to take advantage of a down market to try to catch a home in this area at the right time.

Is this the home?  He now thinks not...
