ATM Scam Card Skimming Spring TX

ATM Scam Card Skimming Spring TXThe ATM scammers are getting quite technical on their scams.  I had a REALTOR friend here in Spring TX who was contacted by his bank and told to cancel his debit card and get a new one because an ATM scam (card skimming) had happened at the ATM machine he used.  Click here to see how it works.  According to the bank the equipment they used here in Spring was a little different but very similiar.  You can also check this out at Snopes.

Click here to watch a video showing how one version of this scam works.

I rarely use my debit card at ATM machines as I find it convenient to get extra cash out when I do my grocery shopping.  After watching that video I think I will try to steer clear of the debit machines.  I have heard of this scam before but never thought of it actually taking place right here in Spring TX.  I guess the scammers can be anywhere so take careful precautions when using a debit machine.

Marchel, that's pretty scary and can be downright devastating if it wipes you out! Thanks for the information because people use ATM's without even thinking about it.

Hi Marchel:  That is one reason why I never use ATM machines.  I would not run the risk... especially with so many ATM's now located in convenience stores and gas stations.  You never know who has messed with them.

Hi Marchel, this is scary, but not for us ,we never use the ATM. Who needs it with a debit card and extra cash at the grocery checkout.

Merry Christmas!

Ginger

Yikes, I drive through my bank all the time and use the ATM's. My grocery stores only allow 35.00 to 50.00 to be taken out at a time. I'll look for those flyers attached. Terrible.

Marchel - This is sad that we  have to constantly modify our activities because of scams.  I must admit I have not used one of those machines since the early 80's.

Linda, it is scary and who would have thought it would be happening in Spring TX.

Karen Anne, I hear you.  I mainly get my cash from the grocery stores but have occasionally used the one at the grocery store.  I guess I will re-think that after hearing about this.

Ginger & Roger, it sounds like you have made a good decision.

Missy, this happened at a bank.  I have seen this before but I guess I NEVER thought of it happening in Spring TX.  Isn't it AMAZING!!

Jennifer, Are you related to my sister (lol).  I have embraced the ATM but she has not.  I guess she was the smart one on that.

Marchel, I've heard of ATM scammers but don't know how prevalent this is. I guess the bank checks for these devices all the time but your writeup and video made me as well aware of what to look for. Thanks.

Good post, Marchel, thanks for the warning!

Marchel...I'm totally opposite of you.  I always use the ATM to get cash back and don't think I've ever gotten cash back when grocery shopping.  This is scary...I think my habits may need to change!

Hello Marchel,
Unbelievable but I do believe.  Thieves are very creative and innovative.  If they would just spend the same amount of time, thought and energy doing honest work.

Gary, I guess the scary part for me of the story is that this happened right here in Spring TX.  You always think of it happening somewhere else.

Robert, it is a scary world out there and we have to protect ourselves in all kinds of new ways.

Mary, it might be the time to start getting your cash at the check out counter.  Where my daughter lives in Queens they have these itty bitty grocery stores and they don't allow you to get cash.  I'm not sure what a person does in that instance.

Cynthia, you make a great point.  Think of all the positive things they could do with that same amount of energy; if they so wished.

Hello there Marchel! Just dropped by to say Merry Christmas to you and yours! Stay safe and happy and full of good eats! See you soon in the Rain!!! Deb

Hi Marchel--I do use the ATM but only the ones at the bank where I would hope they are checked for tampering more vigorously. Scary that it happened in a small town like Spring TX but I guess thieves go where they believe the security will be less stringent. Thanks for the warning.

12/23/2007 08:34 AM by Teri Eckholm, Realtor® Anoka County MN (Keller Williams Premier Realty)

Debra, Merry Christmas to you also.

Teri, I was amazed that it would happen here in Spring and at a bank's ATM.  They must check because they had everyone that used it that day get a new debit card.  What a pain!  Spring is a suburb of Houston so actually fairly big and very busy; but you still don't think of it happening in your back yard.

Hi Marchel,

Seems like we are always having to watch what we are doing.  Thanks for the heads up on this one.

On a lighter note, we want to wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas, and hope you have a great New Year.

We don't have an ATM card, still use checks and credit cards exclusively. This after getting an ATM card when they first came out and having withdrawals appear not only from machines we'd never used but in counties we'd never been to.  Nope, not for us.

And was I glad when we had a occasion of identity theft where someone got hold of our account information and made fake checks (complete with my husband's first name misspelled) and wrote them at a variety of stores. It was SO much easier when I could print out the copies of the checks that our bank had scanned in when they cleared them and point out that they bore no resemblance to the ones we'd had for 30-odd years nor did the handwriting resemble either of ours in any way, shape or form.  One reason I hate, hate, HATE the new practice some stores have of returning your check to you after putting it through the register - no, I don't want the original, I want the bank to have a copy of EVERY check written on our account for security reasons.

Tricia, Wow you had a rotten experience right off the bat.  I have used my ATM card for years but mainly just get cash when I buy my groceries and after hearing about this I will continue with that practice.  Someone sure went to great lengths to access your checking account.  Isn't that AMAZING!  If they used all that energy on something that was legal no telling what they would accomplish.

Marchel - I have heard of these machines, it is unbelievable what lengths these thieves will go to.  Wonder why the banks' cameras do not catch them, I guess they are pretty sneaky.

it always amazes me at how smart crooks can be  - if only they would use their wisdom in a more positive way
