It's Your Money - Expense Calculator - Money Management Help

With today's debit and credit cards it's very easy to buy anything from a coffee at Tim's to a spontaneous purchase at a high end boutique, even groceries at the corner grocery. Some folks make these purchases with out a second thought as to how much they are spending because it is so easy.

It can be a real eye opener when we sit down and check how much we spend on the simplest things that we could just as easily live without.

Industry Canada has some wonderful Consumer Resources to help you manage and protect your financial well being.

One resource is an expense calculator that helps you calculate just how much you are spending on everyday items.

Chai Tea $1,548.00 per annum

$2.00 x 3per day - $30.00 x 4.3weeks per month - $129 x12months

It is suprising how fast a few small items can add up over a year for example simply buying 3 extra Lg Chi Teas 5 days a week At Tims would cost $1548 per year.

Four items alone could cost $12,000 plus annually. That could buy you groceries for a year for at least two people

I had a professor in college who said that if you want to have some insight into your own value system....look at your checkbook....too true.

That's a great thing to do Kathy. And looking at the example above, I guess I'm not buying coffee or eating out very much.  :-)

I know it is not fashionable, Kathy, but, more often than not, I "brown bag" my lunch.  I eat "better" and save money.

Sally and David  - how true ..... our generation still uses checkbooks but they are disappearing I wonder how much of a factor that is, how much is it affecting todays value systems

Gabe - for some that is just the tip of the iceberg ..... what about those who smoke or drink and the cost of cigarettes and alcohol

Chris - sometimes I wish my car had a mini fridge ..... I always carry water and fruit, veggies or some sort of nibble food ..... we have to have something with us as we often do not get the opportunity to get home for dinner. There are often days in a row where the only meal I eat at home is breakfast

Toni - indeed I suspect there are many who  could afford to live in the house of their dreams if they managed their discretionary spending
