Do you need an elevator speech? Probably, if you ever encounter people who might be potential clients or referrals. Here are four steps to creating the perfect elevator speech:

1. Set a timer for 10 minutes and spend that time brainstorming phrases or key words that describe how you help people. Write them down.

2. Use the words and phrases that you brainstormed to write sentences. Eliminate industry jargon or phrases that the average consumer won't understand. Use descriptive words, focusing on how you are the best at helping people accomplish their goals.

3.  Choose the best 2-3 sentences and connect them into one thought. Perhaps create a hook or leave a little room for curiosity to pique their interest. Keep it to about 60 seconds.

4. Practice out loud and in front of your family and coworkers or accountability partners. Rework it as often as possible until it sounds natural and makes sense to you and until you're comfortable with it.

5. Refine and reword your elevator speech frequently to keep it fresh.

Wayne and Jean Marie ,

This is a great post.  I would with people in sales and explain the importance of a clear concise explaination of what you do.  You nailed it.  Write it and practice it.

I had to chuckle, our county now has two elevators. I have used one one time and was in there by myself. Glad the elevator speech doesn't just work in an elevator!

Great advice. I've just completed this exercise for a non-profit I am involved with. What an excercise to get all that passion and ideas condensed to just those few words. The truth is those are the few words the listener will allow you time for. In that short time, you better provide enough that the listener will want to stay on or set an appointment.

Cheers.

It's very helpful having a set speech that you can use for brief encounters with people. Something interesting that doesn't come off as "salesy" but is genuine, is always good!

Good reminder.  Even when we know our topic well learning to be concise is a good thing.

Well I'm not going to make my ten comments today because I actually went and wrote mine.  I'm pretty good off the cuff.  I did right one though that I feel applies to everything.

This is why I still love ActiveRain.   First congrats on 2 features.   Read and learned from both.  I've been successfully selling real estate for 19 years but still find learning something fresh keeps me fresh and moving forward.  Thanks for the motivation!   Debby

Money flows to different.

Stop saying the same things every other agent says.  We are thought of as commodities in the marketplace.  Set yourself apart!  Say something that gets people's attention... that add in rapport, and then follow it up with a top shelf customer experience.

Wayne and jean Marie:

I participated in the contest Dorie mentioned.  I had a lot of fun honing that elevator speech.  It turned out be a little over 4 minutes.  I am still working on improving it.

Wayne and Jean Marie, Great advice here. I wrote an elevator speech last year for an AR contest but haven't used it yet. I'll have to go back to it and relate your suggestions to it. Thanks so much!
