If you have a minor in your car, DON'T LIGHT UP, at least after January 1, 2008.
While this really has nothing to do with real estate, it's pretty significant.
A new (well, revised) bill (SB 7)has now been passed in California that makes it an infraction is a motorist lights up (whether driving or stopped) if there is a minor in the car. Here is some of the details from the California Legislature website.
The concern, of course, is about the effects of passive smoking.
(1) Existing law makes it an infraction for a person to smoke a cigarette, cigar, or other tobacco-related product within 25 feet of a playground or tot lot sandbox area. This bill would make it an infraction punishable by a fine not exceeding $100 for a person to smoke a pipe, cigar, or cigarette in a motor vehicle, whether in motion or at rest, in which there is a minor. This bill would prohibit a law enforcement officer from stopping a vehicle for the sole purpose of determining whether the driver was in violation of the antismoking provisions imposed by the bill.
You can read about the proceedings, voting and more here.
If you are a smoker, I'm sorry if this offends you. But you need to know about it if you are, or might have someone in your car smoking when you have kids with you.
