DALLAS - A Dallas Eagle Scout has achieved an extremely rare accomplishment by earning 17 Palm awards.
Roland Salatino was given his recent award just one day after his 18th birthday, which also marked the end of his eligibility in the scouts. It was a very special moment for his family. Other scouts and parents also showed up just to witness the event.
“You have a Super Bowl event every year. You don’t have a 17 Palm guy every year. So I would put it more along the lines of a perfect game or something like that. It is very rare. A small fraction of scouts get Eagle, less than one in 20. And of that small fraction less than one in 100 get a single Palm,” said Ram Venkataraman, his scout master.
FOX 4 reported on Salatino in 2008 when he earned all 121 Boy Scout merit badges. Since then the organization has added five more badges. Salatino has earned those too.
To achieve Eagle status, Boy Scouts must earn 21 merit badges. Each Palm award equals five merit badges and three months of consistent service to the scouts. It took Salatino four years to get his 17 Palms.
The St. Mark’s School of Texas student also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and was just accepted into Harvard University.
