I used to be an engineer, among other things, and have been a techy since I wrote software for the first Apple II computers in the mid 1970s.  In August of last year I got my hands on one of the bargain-basement HP TouchPad tablets.  For $132, I got a really powerful tablet that turned out to be useful for many real estate related things (taking notes, making presentations, email, etc) but the important apps for my MLS and other tools didn't work.  That required Android.

Installing Android

I spent quite a bit of time reading many blogs about installing Cyanogenmod's version of the HP Open Source Android OS - Ice Cream Sandwich (aka ICS).  The steps were easy.  Really.  Anyone could do it, even if they weren't an old hacker.  So, I took the plunge, followed the directions, and installed the files for Android.

Eureka!  It Works!

The installation took 10 minutes.  No errors.  No failures.  Perfect.  The Android setup screen came up, I connected to my Google account, and I had a perfectly good Android tablet.  Within an hour, I had all the important apps installed and ready to go.  I even had Netflix streaming!

Why Did I Upgrade?

The tablet had much less value than it could because it was running WebOS (which is still installed).  Being on Android means I can truly switch to a paperless business model and conduct much more client work using my tablet than my laptop.  The overall quality of my customer experience should go up as a result.

If you have an HP TouchPad and would like to run Android, let me know if you need any help.  I can tell you exactly what to get and show you very simple instructions to upgrade.  My thanks to the Cyanogenmod team for all their work.

Hey good job.  My husband is an IT expert and loves his Droid phone.  I have an iPad and iPhone 4.  We have the debate constantly but he won't get me to switch.

hey bryan - Wow!  I didn;t know you could get an HP touchpad for $132.  Is that standard or did you score big time?  Anyway, I have been resisting one but know it is inevitable that I will eventually end up with one.  I just might hit you up on your offer!

Bryan, I'm a Mac, iPhone, iPad girl. I know there are som things that run better on Android, but the intuitiveness of Apple products wins the day for me :)
