Surviving a Politically Correct Christmas (I mean Holiday) ... isn't as easy as it used to be.
The world I grew up in we never worried about offending someone by saying Merry Christmas or sending a card with a Christmas Tree or Santa Claus on the front. Did we offend folks? Maybe - but I never heard the complaints.
Were people sincerely offended (back then) or have we created this new offence? It is hard to know for sure unless you were on the other side.
I have never been offended by others Religious beliefs or holidays or sayings. That's not to say I celebrate them or would understand the traditions; but someone saying a simple "Happy Hanukkah" never then nor now bothers me.
During the Christmas (Holiday) season - In our current society you cannot turn around without hearing some story about how someone was "offended" by something. Weather its Christmas trees in an airport or a Nativity Scene on someones own front lawn - someone is "Terribly Offended".
Have we all gone just a little overboard??? In Real Estate I cannot ask (nor do I give a damn); weather a client is Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindi, or whatever. It's not an issue #1; #2 it's illegal to ask. So I often do not know. Yet last week; I was at a Holiday party and ran into a Title Attorney and I said the dreaded "Merry Christmas". How could I?!?!
Well he said "Merry Christmas back"; shook my hand and we shared a cocktail and moved on about the party. Another agent ran over to me and said "OH MY GOSH! You know he's Jewish right? You said Merry Christmas!". (well thank goodness the world did not come to a crashing halt!)
I was polite and said "oops I didn't know." I got the eye like "you should have known better" and he moved on.
Was anyone really offended? I sure don't think so.
In a nutshell here's my point: I won't be offended if you say "Happy Hanukkah" or "Happy Ramadan" or whatever. You should not be offended if I say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays".
Cheers to all and Happy (Gregorian calendar) New Year.
