ON MY SON ADVISE, WHO IS A 2ND YEAR COLLEGE STUDENT, I RECENTLY WATCHED THE ENTIRE 4 PART DOCUMENNTARY BY DIRECTOR SPIKE LEE "WHEN THE LEEVES BROKE". IT WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO CONTINUE TO WATCH AND I MUST ADMIT AT TIMES IT MADE ME CRY . I HAD MANY EMOTIONS. I WAS MAD , SAD, GLAD , ELATED AS WELL AS RELIEVED ; ESPECIALLY WHEN I THOUGHT HELP WAS COMING AND EVERYONE WOULD BE SAFE. OR MAYBE THAT WAS WHEN I GOT TO PART 4 AND I THOUGHT THE RESIDENTS OF NEW ORLEANS WOULD BE ABLE TO GO BACK HOME ! NOT, I THOUGHT TO CONTACT SPIKE LEE AND SAY YOU HAVE TO DO PART 5 REGENIFICATION... THE PROCESS IN WHICH WEALTHLY INVESTORS COME IN AND TAKE CONTROL OF ONCE LOW TO MODERATE INCOME HOMEOWNERS LAND . AS WE ALL KNOW TO BUILD BEAUTIFUL HIGH RISE CONDOS AND MUTI FAMILY UNITS OVERLOOKING WATER ETC... I KNOW TOO WELL ABOUT IT. IT'S HAPPENING IN MY VERY CITY AND MAYBE YOUR OR MAYBE IT'S HAPPENING TO YOU! I SAY RETURN THESE RESIDENTS TO THEIR BIRTH PLACE... NOW, GOV'T YOU HEAR ME.... GET THEIR LAND CLEARED, GET THEIR PLANS DRAWN, GET THEIR BUILDERS LINED UP, GET THEM A REALTOR, GET THEM AN INSPECTOR, AND GET THEM CLOSED... SO THEY CAN BEGAN TO HEAL!
WHAT IS REGENIFICATION AND WHY IS IT BAD FOR NEW ORLEANS:
WHAT HAPPENES WHEN THIS PROCESS TAKES PLACE
HOW DOES IT AFFECT CONSUMERS

Lori asked me to jump in briefly on this topic and add my opinion. Anyone who knows me will assure you that I have plenty of opinions and am always ready and able to share them! As far as gentrification is concerned, I have some mixed feelings regarding the purpose. While I typically like the end result of gentrification - I mean who doesn't love what beautiful high rise luxury condos, town homes and offices can do to revitalize an area - I do take issue with the process that occurs to get to that result. Displacing people with lower incomes from their homes is inexcusable! These are the people who need our help the most and often (right or wrong) have learned to rely on the government to help them in their need. To simply turn a cold shoulder to them and put them out is not the way to go. Often, particularly in the devasted New Orleans area, the people that are ousted from their homes are not just renters, but homeowners who have been in their homes for years, finally acheiving the American dream of home ownership. To strip them of that dream in the name of progress is short-sighted and simply not right. My desire and my challenge to the government of New Orleans and other cities looking at gentrification projects is to look at more creative ways to incorporate the existing residents and to help them improve their neighborhoods on their own with out simply moving them to another blighted area. Just my two cents! :)
