Lavaman Keauhou Triathlon Scheduled for November 18, 2012

Kailua Bay

After competing in a hand full of sprint triathlons, I decided to sign up for the Keauhou Lavaman 2012. It's an olympic distance race consisting of a 1.5K swim followed my a 40K bike ride and a 10K run. The Lavaman Keauhou starts and finishes at beautiful Keauhou Bay and much of the race winds through the Keauhou resort area of Kailua-Kona, which is one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii. The race is sponsored by the Keauhou Bay Sheraton and there will be an after party with music on the beautiful grounds.

Kailua-Kona has more than it's fair share of world class athletes for a sleepy little beach town. I know of a former Olympic swimmer with multiple medals, a womens masters swimmer with current world records, an Ultraman top competitor in his age group and world ranked professional triathletes to name a few. Kona is a fun place to get outside and exercise.  Kailua Bay is a popular place for ocean swimming. There are buoys placed in increments going South down the coast across the bay. I have to force myself to swim laps in the pool but swimming in Kailua Bay is enjoyable and different every time. The water is crystal clear and I always see lots of colorful reef fish along the way. Often, on early morning swims there is a pod of dolphins relaxing in the bay. I'm told they hunt at night in the deep ocean and rest in the shallow water of the bays in the mornings.  Kailua Bay is also where the Ironman World Championship swim is held every year.

Speaking of swimming running and biking in Kona, there are Peaman races down at the pier just about once a month. These free events are organized by Sean "Peaman" Pagett, a long time kona resident who is very appreciated by all of the people that race at these events. Peamans dedication to putting on these events is a gift to the community. I'm not sure when they started but the Peaman races have become very popular. I believe there were almost 200 competitors at a recent race. Some of the races are just runs, others are biathlons and triathlons. The races are always fun social gatherings with plenty of hanging out and socializing before and after on the pier. During the races everyone has fun and goes at their own level of intensity. There are also different distances to choose from so it is great for folks of just getting back in shape too. If anyone is interested, take a look at the Peaman 2012 race calendar and just show up at any of the Sunday morning events. No registration is required.
