Earlier today, Ben Kakimoto wrote a blog post about how his profile on the ActiveRain Real Estate Network is now one of the top ranking pages in Google for the key phrase "John L Scott Seattle", ranking just ahead of his main web site.  Despite the young age of this network (less than 6 weeks) old, many of the profiles are seeing high rankings in Google for a huge variety of keywords.

To us this isn't surprising at all given that this site was designed to allow search engines to find and index member profiles efficiently (SEO).  The majority of members will see there profiles appear in the results of search engines, such as Google within several days. They will typically occupy one of the top spots when someone searches on that member's name.  This is extremely important, as it allows prospective clients to search on that person/companies name to easily retrieve additional information.

As the site continues to mature we will begin to rank very well for more generalized search terms, such as "real estate agents".  This is because of the amount of content on this site, and the number of other sites which link to us.  Almost on a daily basis we are making steady climb on both general real estate terms and region specific terms.  Search engines are set up in way that they favor large, authorative sites, which explains why sites such as HomeGain, Realtor.com have typically dominated the rankings.  Traditionally individuals haven't been able to compete with these large players without huge investments of either time or money.  Unlike these other sites we pass all of the traffic back to our members free of charge:

Higher Ranking In Search Engines = More Consumer Traffic = More Clients

Our main site http://www.thompsonsrealty.com ranks #2 on Google for "Century 21 Gilbert". It's been on-line for almost two years.

Our ActiveRain profile ranks #7 on Google for the same search term. It's been on-line for what, three weeks?

WOW!  That's pretty amazing, especially since the site is so young.  I guess it didn't get stuck in the sandbox!

Bill, you are fairly correct in your points.

Searching on someones name won't bring you large amounts of traffic.  But being able to easily be found under your name is very important when dealing with clients who may want more information.  For example we've had a lot of cases where agents have been contacted through the system by people they'd had a conversation with on the street, who remembered a name but didn't have contact information.

And your also right the content/relavency will have a bigger effect on results than the platform.  But the point is that search engines algorithms are highly weighted to favor large authorative sites vs. smaller ones.  Which is why it takes incredible amounts of effort for individuals to set up sites than rank well for generic or even regional search terms.

The rankings in the generic and regional terms aren't there yet, it'll just take time.  But this site is very good at ranking and generating traffic on "long tail" terms.

Boy,

I wonder how many of the other John L. Scott realtors in seattle are pissed that they are being bumped out of the top 10 for that search term?

Matt, For the SEO dummies like me, can you tell me what we should be doing to improve SEO rankings for Google? Should we be adding key words or tags to our posts? I know I'm probably not even asking the right question, but hope you understand. Typing in our name in Google is not what I think most if not all of us are looking for. When someone types in our city and real estate, we would like to be popping up. Thanks Matt. Stan

There Stan, fixed the comment typo for you.  Going to add the ability for people to edit/delete their own comments in the next day or two.

Ranking for regional real estate terms like "Seattle Real Estete" will mainly be a matter of time.  The general architecture of the site is built to optimize for these terms, but because of the relative young age of the site (less than 7 weeks) we are competative on them yet.  I think it will take a couple of big google updates to get high enough to start seeing lots of clicks on the larger terms.

You may want to read Bill French's blog post and the comments dealing with "long tailed" search.  It's a common misconception that sites generate the majority of their traffic from terms like "Seattle Real Estate", they don't.  Most traffic comes from terms you would never even anticipate, because people search on all kinds of wierd terms.  I gave the example of BrioRealty.com our company built several years ago.  They get 4000+ unique visitors a day and generate over 200 leads per day and this is almost totally on "long tail" search hits.  That's what this site is really going to be good at doing...

As far as key words and tags, probably the best suggestion I have is when making blog posts pick a good title which includes a couple key words.  Jason Ungos wrote a good post about effective tagging for blogs which applies to all blogs, not just the ones on ActiveRain.

Stan, to give you an idea of the long tail effect, I just looked at the traffic logs for Brio Realty.  So far this month they've gotten close to 30,000 hits from search engines (in 12 days).  There is only a single key phrase that got more than 100 hits, "Washington State" with 101.  There are only 17 key phrases with over 20 hits, and less than 50 phrases with over 10 hits a each.  And even out of that 50 with more than 10, you would be hard pressed to guess more than a couple.
