Hungry? There Are 88,000 Seniors in Minnesota Who Are.

By
Real Estate Agent with Sabinske & Associates, Inc. (Albertville, St. Michael)

I just got a flyer in the mail which stunned me.

It stated that 88,000 seniors are struggling with hunger each year and less than half are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

If you are one of those seniors or know someone who is, it is easy to find out if you qualify to receive an EBT card,   If your income is less than $1,498 per month, you might qualify.

Hunger Free Minnesota has given out the information you need.  Calll 1-888-711-1151 or visit mnfoodhelpline.org today.

You might be able to find the means to prepare healthy, nutritious meals at home again.  And, don't forget Second Harvest Heartland and your local food shelves, too.

I would hate to see our seniors live without the means to support themselves, but even worse, to live with hunger everyday.

Hi Suzanne - That's shocking and shameful. It's just not acceptable to have hunger exist in our society at all, and to have it in these numbers, and for that particular segment of our society, should not be tolerated by any of us. And the numbers for hungry children are equally horrible. Thanks for doing something to make a difference.

It's difficult for me to believe that our country still has issues with people going hungry. At least there are some programs available to help some people. Remember that elderly gentleman that froze to death in his house? I think it was a couple of years ago, and in Michigan. This country still has problems with people not receiving the assistance they deserve. Sometimes it's because the person is too proud, but mostly it's because of the red tape and paperwork involved.

Suzanne -- it's a frightening and shocking statistic and so very sad.   This is a wonderful way to spread the word that there is hope for those in need.

Suzanne:  This truly IS a disgrace.  There are so many states that are cutting programs that help those in need these days.  It seems that everything that "certain" politicians can think of to reduce the deficit... in their opinion, has to come out of programs that are really needed.

Texas is a prime example.  Our Dear Governor Perry can spend Ten Million Dollars on "renovating" the Governor's Mansion... but other programs... they cut, cut, cut.  Unfortunately, I don't think that things like this in The People's Republic of Texas will ever change... but we're working on it.

Don't forget about senior dining sites, which are scattered around Sherburne County and, I am sure, many other communities.  There is also Meals on Wheels, which is another, in my opinion, under used resource.

Jen, that is a great suggestion!  And, from what I understand that will be the first to go if the sequester goes into effect on Friday, unfortunately.  Call your Congress people!

Suzanne:  It is so unfortunate that the folks in the House of Representatives would rather cut a program that feeds Seniors rather than order one less drone.  Priorities.
