Friends for Life, Inc! (FFL) is a no-kill, non-profit sanctuary for dogs and cats near Lewisburg WV.  Friends for Life has been accepting abandoned and no-longer-wanted dogs and cats since 1996.

Friends for Life, Inc. is not affiliated with any other organization or shelter, or any other Friends for Life organization.  They receive NO local, state, or federal funding and rely solely on contributions from individuals.  Each animal that they accept is wormed; vaccinated; neutered/spayed if unaltered; plus any needed veterinary care, including tests, treatment, medications and/or surgery, is provided during the time the animal is with FFL  and many have been here their entire lives.

Currently, Friends for Life cares for fifty-one dogs and twelve cats. Forty-one dogs are seniors and many have been with FFL since the mid- to late '90s.    FFL is completely committed to each animal here for its entire lifetime.   If you would like to help FFL,  make a contribution for either food or veterinary care, or consider becoming a Sponsor.

Special Sponsors are needed for the following animals (please see their pictures and bios on our Our Adoptable Pet List):

Friends for Life, NemoNemo, a 7-year-old Yellow Lab mix, has general health issues.  He is now on the same grain-free diet and AllerG3 supplement, but needs a monthly sponsor(s) so we can continue to keep him on the grain-free food ($63 per mo. or any amount).

Friends for Life, GumpyGumpy- is a very shorthaired mix- possibly with a little Dobie in her background- who is almost 16 years old and has a benign adenoma on her liver.  She is not on a special diet, but she does get Vetri Liver Chews daily to help support her liver (please see her bio on our Pet List). The liver chews cost $32 per month.

Friends for Life, CassieCassie, a 12-year-old Heeler/Beagle mix with hip dysplasia needs a dental ASAP and in-house bloodwork for liver/kidney function.

I love no kill animal shelters and I've been a volunteer for a no kill animal shelter up here for 15 years and love working for them to help them keep those animals alive.

Friends for Life sounds like a wonderful shelter and kudos to you for blogging about them Rebecca! I volunteer at a wonderful shelter where we walk every dog 4 times a day and just before bed, we give them Kongs filled with frozen peanut butter and dog chow as a treat to calm them down and give them something to look forward to. They go crazy when you walk in the kennel with the giant bucket of them - it's so much fun!

I love no-kill shelters and they always need extra support due to caring for the unadoptable animals for a lifetime.  Thank you for giving your local no-kill shelter such awesome publicity!

Debra, so do I... WOW that would be great to have no-kill shelters across the country.

Alexandra, I agree and they all seem to have many volunteers, but can always use more food and other items.

Marge, yes they do need extra support.

Rebecca, I'm glad they've been taking care of some of these animals since the 90s...I wish more people would understand the rewards of adopting older pets...that would then free up a lot of room with FFL to take in more pets.  Good post.

Rebecca, this is one of those bittersweet posts that tug at me. I'm like Mona, with both the idea that they've had some wonderful pets there for so long (16 years old--my how wonderful a testament!) as well as the fact that some people would really do WELL with an older dog. I love all of these furry faces, God love 'em!!

Mona, I agree,  adopting an older pet would be rewarding to both the adopter and FFL.

Gayle, thank you and I'm hoping to get an older dog  for my brother.
