Join Me and My Family on Our Recent Trip to the Mall - You Won't Regret It!

We went shopping at Lakeline Mall in Cedar Park a couple of nights ago with all three kids in tow.  We first visited JC Penney so that my wife could pick out some clothes for her mom.  Since I was on kid duty, I watched the kids play "hide and seek" in the clothes racks and throughout the department.  I remember doing the same thing when I was little, but I didn't have any siblings, so my version basically consisted of me hiding until my mom was in a near panic looking for me, then popping out.  Surprise!  Why are there police with you, mom?

They had an absolute blast, and although they were being a little loud, I did my best to restrain myself from telling them to keep it down.  It's Christmas time!  Why should I quell their joy?  I figured it was better than whining from boredom.  I guess kids will never tire of hiding inside the circular racks of clothes.  They aren't that hard to find when they are giggling in there.

Since my wife needed to go to a couple of stores without them seeing her purchases, I took the kids to a toy store that appeared to be temporary for the holiday season.  They sold a wide variety of radio controlled vehicles, helicopters, animals, etc.  Normally, this is the type of "store" that would be confined to a small kiosk, but I guess they ordered more stuff and decided to inhabit an actual space for a month or two.

We spent about 20-30 minutes there, and the kids had a good time playing.  As I was browsing the shelves (which didn't take very long), I found some funny verbiage on the boxes.  I couldn't help myself - I knew that I had to get photos with my camera phone for blogging later.  It is clear that these toys were produced in a land where English is not the primary language.  Take a look (sorry for the blurriness - I didn't want them to question me as to why I was photographing their products so I had to move quickly and furtively):

This is the edge of the box.  There are no words to the left of this image.  It says, "MORE Funny to play it!"  Um...cool?  It also said, "High Quality Workmanship".  It has been my experience that only toys with inferior workmanship feel the need to put this on the box.  In other words, the truly high-quality toys don't need to say that.

I don't know that this needs any particular commentary. I just thought it sounded funny.

Now that I see this one, it actually looks like I was drinking in the mall with my kids.  I realize it is exceptionally blurry.  Please allow me to explain why this is humorous.  It states,

  • SPECIAL TOYS COLLECTION
  • SUPER CENTURY DESIGN.
  • COMPLETELY NEW TO.
  • COME IN TO THE MARKET.

What is a "super century" design?  Also, the punctuation made me laugh out loud.  Are they asking me to come in to the market?  I'm already here, right?

I was actually planning on purchasing one of the toys with its "high quality workmanship" for my son even though they didn't ask for anything, but when my wife returned with our toddler, the manager/salesperson/whatever kept taunting the baby with one of the remote control vehicles, and it irritated me, so we simply left and went to GameStop.

Hey Jason - your blog brought back a nightmare for me. When my youngest was two and my oldest was four, I was shopping in Sears. My 2-year-old decided it would be fun to play the "hide in clothes rails" game, but I had her strapped into her stroller. Smart dad huh? I literally was concentrating on my eldest for ten seconds when she said "where's Rachel, daddy?" Talk about panic! This Sears is in the Florida Mall and my main concern was not allowing her to get into the main mall. I had security there and the shutters were literally closing when she popped out of a circular clothes rack. To this day I have no idea how she unstrapped herself from the stroller,  but I know I aged a good three years in that ten minutes and I have the gray hairs to prove it. Still things move on! She is 16 now and in fact I blogged about her this morning. go check it out! Finally - I have no e-mail from you!

Jason - Thanks, the "Fuzzy" pictures say it all, and if I could come back with a funny grammatically incorrect asian statement I would but I can't so I won't.

JASON - As soon as I see this type of packaging I run for the hills.  I know that even though the price may be good, there is a piece of junk waiting for me when I open the packaging.  I am entertained by the writing though.  Fun story as usual with the kids.

Those are too funny!  I'm definitely going to have to pay more attention to what's written on the boxes of any toys I buy.

Jason:  You are among friends. It is okay to admit that you were 'enjoying the season' while shopping. You KNOW that camera phones only capture what your eyes see. Haha...just kidding. This is funny! Merry Christmas, my friend!!

Are you for hire in NC?  I would send you to another location like the Game Zone or something to work off the extra energy.

Hi Jason,  Sounds like a nice evening at the mall with the kids.  I LOVE those toy stores with all the electronic toys.  Now you will have us all reading the boxes when we go in these mall stores again.  Looking for interesting verbiage while our spouses wonder what the heck are you doing!  Should be fun.  Thanks for sharing!

Jason.... how funny in regards to that last box. It makes you wonder...  In regards to allowing your kids terror the mall, how dare you.... lol  I can't judge, because I wasn't there. I know it's the holidays, but it does irritate me when kids are way out of control, running into you, and don't say that they are sorry. But I couldn't see your kids doing this.  ;o)

Seriously....  sounds like a fun family thing ....  happy Holidays to you and your family.

SIMON - That is a terrible feeling and your stomach always drops swiftly when you lose a child, even if only for a minute or two.  That happened to us once with our toddler - I think it lasted about 45 seconds, but it felt like half an hour.  Very scary!  Sorry to bring back bad memories.  I hope you and your family have a joy-filled 2008!

JOHN - I am glad you appreciated it, and thank you for not forcing a joke here.

GREGORY - Great point.  We do a lot of ours online, too.

ADAM - I am sorry to hear that.  I purchased one of the "super century design" toys for your son, but I returned it after reading your comments here.  :-)

MANA - I had one in hand for Adam's boy, but he was too concerned about safety, so I took it back today.

LISA - If you know of any offhand, I would be happy to share these pictures there.

VANESSA - Yes, I have seen that one before.  Great, funny stuff!  Is that really necessary?  Did someone really do that?

JIM & MARIA - The items just seemed to have a "cheap" theme, and after reading one box, I had to look at the others.  Thanks for your comments!

ELIZABETH - Believe me (and I think you will), if I were truly drinking, I would have no problem admitting it here.  Thanks for your funny comments.  My name is Jason, and I am a blogoholic.

LATONIA - Sure, for the right price I will travel.

KATHLEEN - I hope you find some hidden gems of your own amongst the toys at the mall.

JEFF - I have pretty good radar when it comes to my kids (i.e. I can tell if they are bothering other people).  They got a bit loud a couple of times, but overall they just had fun hiding from each other.  There is nothing cuter than watching a toddler play hide-and-seek.

SALLY - I appreciate that.  I hope you and yours also have a wonderful 2008!
