According to the Wall Street Journal Real Estate Agents are #155 amongst the list of Best And Worst Jobs of 2012.  According to CareerCast.com these jobs were ranked based on 5 things - physical demands, work environment, income, stress and hiring outlook.

Real Estate Agents - what do you think?  Do you think that we are a "Best" job or a "Worst" job?  And how do you come about that response?  Folks who aren't Real Estate Agents, what is your perception of Real Estate Agents and where we should be in this list?

Interesting stuff.  A Dairy Farmer (of which I know a lot) ranks 199 AFTER Enlisted Military Soldier and before a Lumberjack. Wow.

Without looking (cheating) I would say we are on the worst list. No benefits such as retirment , health, dental , vision, vacation, sick leave......do I need to go on? Now I will check the link and see where the chips landed. Suggested!

Hi Kasey, I can see why we rank so low ... lots of stress for sure and many long days (nights) and we don't always get compensated for our work. On the other hand, the majority of us truly enjoys what we are doing and there's a lot of satisfaction in the end result. If that were part of the criteria, I think we should rank much higher.

On another note, I'm not surprised to see Military way at the bottom for the criteria used. However, if I look at my husband, I know that this is the most fulfilling career for him and he gets something that many other professionals don't get - pride.

Winston, haha, I wondered about some of the jobs and their spots too.

John, out of 200 we got 155...

Andrea, I can see why we rank so low too.  At the same time we also have such great earning potential - while it's possible to not know when our next paycheck is, we also have no ceiling as to how much we can make.  I, too, am not surprised military ranked so low - I was actually surprised that it beat dairy farmers - I have a lot of dairy farmer friends.  While that is tough work, I would think that being active duty military would be much harder.  Your husband is an admirable man and it's great that he has pride.  Sounds like an awesome guy.  Please thank him for me.

Fred, I added the Career Cast links to my blog post too - thanks for linking it.  I should have added that to begin with.

Kasey I'd say for years we would be ranked high on the list....but the last 5 or 6.....we all know that one. Interestng to see my husband way high on the list and his job is stressful and demanding. More than mine....hmmmmm

Kasey,  Being a dairy farmer means you are really tied to your job....twice a day, seven days a week.  This "job" isn't quite that bad time-wise, but the frustrations can be very tiresome.

A roller-coast is all I can say. Some days it's great, other days it's . . . not so good.

Anna, may I ask what your husband does?

Don, I will say that I'd rather be a real estate agent than a dairy farmer, that's for sure.

Charlie, definitely true - tons of highs and lows.

I'm surprised by the list too.  What may be a fantastic job for one person may be complete boredom to another.  There are many things to love about the Real Estate business.  I enjoy meeting and interacting with many different people, plus the challenge of helping them find (or sell) a house.  So while it may not be someone else's cup of tea, and certainly isn't the least stresfull job out there, it has been just right for me.  : )

Good to be in a job you love, right Rob?  I do think Real Estate can be extremely stressful - even more so than consumers and those not in the industry realize. -Kasey
