Bremerton WA Homeowners | What do you know about your Homeowner's Policy?

How many times have you shopped around for homeowners insurance?  This seems to be an item that is left to the last minute and then rushed.  I am sure several new homeowners have just gone with who the lender or escrow agent has recommended because it was quick and easy. Did they get the best deal? Who knows?  I am sure that no one did much research on their behalf.

Have you ever compared rates and coverage on any of your home purchases? Have you ever changed insurance carriers after you have closed?  You pay hundreds of dollars a year in homeowners insurance and yet I bet it is one item that you really haven't spent the time researching.

Does your insurance company even know who you are? Do you have contact with them? Are you getting the service you are paying for?  I challenge you to this - call your insurance carrier and ask some questions, see what they say, see how you are treated and then call a competitor and do the same. This is a very important part of the home buying process so please don't take it lightly.

Ask about discounts.  Many people buying their first home don't know that they get a discount on their auto policy if they are homeowners and insure both at the same company.  Ask about coverages.  Specifically your personal property.  Make sure you are covered to buy the same item today, not the depreciated value of the item.  It will cost you $2000 to buy a sofa, it would stink if the insurance gave you only $500 to buy a new one since that is what your old one was "worth" before your loss.  Homeowners is not expensive for the protection, get the protection.

Hi Jo,

You're making some good points with this post. I'm guilty a little on this one myself. I sort of inherited my agent when my prior one retired. The office staff know me when I call, yet the agent does not. Truthfully I'm not one bit impressed with my agent, however his back-up is great. BTW, I changed my deductibles about 2 years ago, it was pretty amazing the reduction in the cost of the policy.

Jon, Yep you got that all right!!! I was always amazed when I worked in escrow how many people just gave me the go ahead with the company we used.

Lynda, In this day and age I am amazed at how many "agents" don't know who their clients are - they let their staff handle it all. I just don't work like that and I expect people I do business with to work like I do :)
