Unlike Jerry Maguire, My Motto Isn’t ‘Show Me The  Money’

There are numerous parallels that can be made for the activities of a sports agent and a real estate agent. In the movie, Jerry Maguire, they were quite obvious:

The effort to get a client
The work to get the best deal for the client
The continued support for the client
The reward at the conclusion of the negotiation with a commission

Unlike the portrayal that was made as agents being money hungry and dollar motivated, with little care for their clients as people, a true professional works to get the best deal for their clients. As they become more involved with the clients, they will also come to warm to them and their families and the relationship becomes more of a partnership with both looking to get a successful conclusion.

We work daily for our business, and no one would deny that we do work for that check. But we also expose ourselves as the caring people that we are with our client relationships and the nature of the way we market ourselves through our blogs.

It’s been demonstrated often by posts written of the warm receptions received by fellow ActiveRain members when going in to make listing presentations and being told that they were the agent’s of choice based on their Internet exposure and presence. In other words, ‘you had us at hello’.

We are all characters living out our lives and working our jobs and the more of ourselves that we put into our work, the more productive and profitable it can become.

I agree if service our clients well and look out for their well being, the money will come.  I also agree that when working with buyers we should say "Show me the money" and pre approval and I will find you a home per your criteria.

Excellent portrayal Ed. Great service, looking after our clients then the money follows. But Jerry McGuire was a good movie.

Craig, thanks, I got inspired by your movie post

Li, I don't think it's a component of our business so much as the definition of doing the job the right way. Thanks for stopping

Karen, when you're first starting out, it's all about the money, as there is no connection to the people involved. As a few deals are completed and the emotions of seeing the new owners with their new homes, the personalization takes over and the business takes a different tone.

Hannah, for sure, thanks

Carla, buyers are the clients that give us the most involvement and the greatest joy, especially when it's a  first time buyer

Juli, people don't really see the work that's involved, they only know of the checks that get passed at closing with no understanding of how the amount is chopped before it actually reaches us.

Debbie, the money only becomes a reality at the closing table, and many a deal is lost before we get there.

Paul, touting being a high dollar producer would make me look for someone else, because the feeling would be that the agent doesn't need my little bit of business

Kathy, for me it's all about the interaction and service to the client. Thanks for stopping

Bryan, that is the best way to grow a business with one happy client at a time.

Erica, thank you, there are no secrets here

Barbara, happy clients are business generators.

Harry, and you cover a lot of different fields

George, giving good service is never a waste of time

Thanks Sandy, it was a good movie with some interesting characters

Kathy, good service and a good pre-approval are a formula for success.

Hi Al & Peggy, it was a good movie with some great lines that came out of it as well.

Ed - Though it's important that we be paid for our work, our expertise and our knowledge, it shouldn't be the be all and end all to the exclusion of our clients.

It pains me that people think we are only in real estate for the money.  We provide a service to our customers.  We help them buy or sell real estate.  Sounds easy to the layman, but we know it is hard work and while the money is appreciated, we are also in it for the satisfaction of help a customer buy or sell real estate with the best possible results for them.

Hi Ed.   Awesome post!    I would think that if one looked at the time, energy and effort we put into our transactions they would see that for most of us it is clearly not just "show me the money".

Great post, Ed.  I also am not "all about the money."  Heck, I never even look at the commission on the listings.  Yes, I make money, by that is not my motivation.

Hi Ed, A wonderful post and certainly worthy of being featured. We do differ in another way from sports agents. We do a lot of pro bono work that my help build our reputation but certainly not our income, :-)
