13 Comments on Worth repeating. Violin students from Searcy AR in the 50's.
I'm sure it wasn't the lst Methodist Church, but First Christian Church. Most of Mrs. Ward's recitals were held there until later at lst Presbyterian.
Mrs. Ward sometimes had violinists Evelyn Thomas and Jamie Jones playing with some of us violinists....they were students of her in her early days of teaching. Those not holding violins did not play violin but played the piano.
Back row: Dorothy Yarnell Warden - our current History Oracle featured weekly in The Daily Citizen. Mrs. Ward, Grace Neal, Evelyn Thomas, Jamie Jones, Bob Fuller, Jeanne Thomas (Evelyn's daughter), Mildred Taylor.
Front row: Billy Summitt, Charlotte Neal (Grace is her mother), Julianne Rand, Carolyn Thompson, Jolene Abboud, me, Mary Kathryn VanPatten, Ann Shannon.
Grace Neal was a very talented pianist, I think she was the official piano player of the Kiwanis Club. I have an idea she played a duet with her daughter, Charlotte. Of course, Jamie is the mother of one of your co-workers, Jim Baugh Jones.
Barbara, you are flaunting your poetic license by publishing my picture, again without my permission.
But Anita, I'm making you famous! Just google Anita Tart Fuller. Thanks for naming all of the group.
Looks like only Julianne, Jolene & Mary Kathryn are having fun and have a smile on their faces. Everyone else looks so stoic including Anita "Tart" Hart Fuller.
I'm not sure it was this picture that was featured before but there's another that's worth taking another look at because it features the First Christian Church. See it here.
For you readers that aren't familiar with "clicking on links", put your mouse cursor on the word "here" above and left mouse button click.
I looked at this photo and wondered where the heck is the bride and the groom? Who are all these bridesmaids? And then I figured if I was a kid, man, I would want to grow up and play the violin so I could wear a princess dress.
It IS interesting that more of us aren't smiling. I should be grinning from ear to ear, having FINISHED playing my piece!
This picture was taken before Bob contracted polio, so it was before l950. The one you wrote about, Don, shows Bob with his crutches. Also notice how much Ann Shannon has grown.
Elizabeth: someone emailed me to ask the color of my dress. I have NO CLUE. Probably pink or light blue.
Don, thanks for finding the old blog and more pictures of this cultured group!
Elizabeth, thanks for looking at our group and my blog! I've got to tell Valerie to go check out your blog!
Mary, that's a good comment on how so many kids in Searcy were taking music lessons. I love the part about the 15 cent tip!
Anita, you are so famous! Can you still play the fiddle violin?
Can I still play the violin? only "sorta".
I sold my original violin when we left Illinois....some years ago I got inspired to start playing again, bought me a violin, case, and music stand at Quattlebaum Music Co. in Searcy. Got so frustrated because I couldn't just start playing..where I left off....that I quit, in a huff, and haven't played a note since.
Mary Kay (VanPatten) James and I used to play duets when we were in high school...we've said we need to get out our violins and see if we can still play together. Maybe we could go to a nursing home to "practice"....they probably wouldn't mind.
Barbara, you get us a gig and we'll be there.
to Mary: might you remember what Mr. and Mr.s Ward ordered daily? Plate lunch? Surely not hamburgers, etc.
Now: remember about how much their lunch bill would have been, with the l5 cent tip. they were VERY FRUGAL, as I recall. Mr. Ward was bookkeeper at Searcy Wholesale all his life. Guess he learned the value of money.
All right, Anita. We have a gig for you and Mary Kay. Get practiced up and tell me when you are ready.
It would be interesting, Mary, to see if you remember the Ward's lunch.
Mary, I agree with you completely. If I knew of a place that had wonderful plate lunches I would probably be johnny-on-the-spot (remember that old saying?) also. And I'd be happy to leave the waitress 15 cents. BTW, my computer does not have a cent mark on it, does yours or anyone's? There is probably a way to make it but I don't know how.
Ladies it may be easier to just type "cents". But since you asked, here's the easiest way.
Enable your numeric kepad by pressing NUM LOCK key
Hold down ALT key
Type 0162 on the numeric key pad
Release ALT key
Vioila! ¢

Don, I KNEW you'd figure out how to make a cent sign! I just knew it! I also knew it would be more trouble than it is worth. Sorta like our REALTOR that is supposed to have that symbol at the end showing a copyright but is too much trouble to do so I don't put it on there. Right now I don't even remember exactly how to do that.
Here you go.
