Realty BloggingFor all of you managers and brokerage owners out there, have you ever considered blogs for internal communication with your agents and your staff?  Well....the exciting news is that Realty Blogging says you should.  Whether you have a single-office real estate company, or a multi-office brokerage company, (even regional or national membership trade associations), all these can benefit from better internal communication that is easy and cost efficient.

Some of these companies and associations may already use intranet applications or rely on e-mails for announcements but there are problems with both approaches.  Traditional intranets can be expensive and difficult to use.  E-mail is open to all kinds of problems, including spam and filters that may block e-mails from ever getting to their destination.

"Fortune 500 companies, including IBM, McDonald's, and DaimlerChrysler, are using blogs just for this purpose"

Some of the benefits of Intranet Blogging:

  • Easy to use (I think we can all agree, based on our experience here with Active Rain).
  • Simple platforms and simple administration (great for companies that don't have a large budget for internal IT resources).
  • Cost-effective (nothing like good and cheap).  One example given is that www.Infoworld.com, a technology company, was presented with a $250K quote for an intranet portal application - they opted for a blog instead and now considers the use of blogs as "indispensable".
  • Archiving information - e-mails usually get lost or trapped in e-mail boxes that no one will ever see again (if you are like me, you receive the e-mail and delete it - what else can you do with all those e-mails?).  Blogs can be archived by topic and date and are easy to retrieve.
  • E-mail Saver - (how many work-related e-mails do you get daily?  Some people spend more than 50% of their time reading and deleting e-mail) - "only real and appropriate content can make it to the site".
  • Build Community - blogs can be used to establish a sense of community within an organization (just like we see community here in Active Rain) - you can learn more about your colleagues and learn about meetings you could not attend through a blog that "fosters wide staff participation".

The last chapter of the book goes into detail about how to put the Intranet Blogging concept into actual practice, and also goes into detail about Intranet Blog Platform requirements, since these need to be password protected and are different than customer-focused blogs.

I want to end this post with a link to a blog by Renee Burrows that really cracked me up.  Although not exactly an Intranet Blog,   it's an analogy to how I envision these taking place; in this case a virtual office meeting where everyone partakes in the fun.  The Interactive Business Meeting..... on Christmas Day! .

FINAL NOTE:

In my opinion, this book is a MUST read - you've made the first step if you are here blogging away in Active Rain and will get tons of benefits from reading it.  Thank you TLW for organizing the reviews and getting this talented group of ladies together, and for including me in the mix.

Great review, as usual, and in great style Ines. As I mentioned to Ann, you also have developed a persona. I like the idea of businesses using blogging. It means I can still work from home:) I finally bought the book though. Took me long enough, but I was still trying to find the time for Marianas' Millionaire Real Estate book. How you guys read, blog, work and live is beyond me:)

"The Lovely Ines"

Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. We are done. I am letting out a deep breath now. Ahhh.

Time to MOVE FORWARD! :)

Great wrap up Ines. Really good read. You did a dynamic post to finish this off. I am so proud. :)

I thank The Good Ladies Of The Rain for digging in and offering up their God given sharing hearts to this project.

You have all come a long long way since we started The Realty Blogging Book Club. I have been seriously impressed with the way you all stuck together to learn about Real Estate Blogging. Without all of you we would never have gotten this done. You have given each other a lot of support. I stood back and watched you all rise above comments, points and rankings in your efforts to learn. Now that's what I call team work Ladies. ROAR!

Let me know when you are all ready to start our next book. I will go ahead and get a new post up for when we are ready to begin.

Once again. Thank you Ines and thank you to The Good Ladies Of The Rain. :)

Ines! You are my last post for the night, I saved the best for last! I agree with you about the chapter, I think though it may have been because so much of the book is chock full of info. I decided after reading this I am calling our IT guy and seeing if he can get them to start a blog. I'll let you know! Very good review GF!  Has ta Manana (LOL I have no idea if I spelled that right:-)  Or even if I'm saying the right thing; og.  Bon Soir :-)

YES!  Great post!  Our local MLS has an area where offices can leave messages or brokerage information but my old office never used this tool.  It would be great to go to an intranet board, read an inspirational post and maybe a tip of the day as it would pertain to our local market - not to mention the weekly meeting, etc!

Ok, I got to feature one of these at some point, and see if some new people can see all the reviews being written.  I'm sure Richard Nacht would be very impressed :)

Good on ya, Matt! I think Mr. Nacht owes you some kind of kick-back for all the free press his book has received on here. It would be interesting to know how many people bought the book as a result of mention on here? Just don't get any ideas about banners!

Great Job, you guys! Motivated me to ask Santa for a copy for Christmas!

Richard has been impressed. I pulled him into one of these threads at Chapter 2 or 3 and I think at first he didn't believe me that people were debating and conversing each chapter with so much energy.

I wish that I could tell you how many books were bought through referral here, it would be an interesting statistic. This is surely one of the more insightful book review groups I've seen in my 10+ years of writing.

In all honesty, some of the ideas and commentary has been even better than parts of the book. I know some of the questions I have received here and via e-mail are pretty interesting.

I read the book, but can definitely say that I got more out of it by reading the reviews and comments as I went along. I think Richard should incorporate these in an addendum to his next edition.

And here when Elaine wrote that our office meetings should go blogular  I was all negative about it!  Being the traditionalist, stick in the mud that I am.

We have so much on our company intranet it is sometimes hard to keep up with but I could definitely see a place for a wiki or a blog.

I gotta read that book...

Ines, great topic. We just instituted this at our company about 4 months ago as a way to cut down on the inter-office email and employees who would use the excuse "Oh, I didn't get that email". It's been an interesting experiment with a fair amount of resistance.

Ines...

Not only did Matt feature this review I featured it with Ann's Review in The Realty Blogging Book Club. That gives you two stars on one post :)

Mariana...

That is a very good idea. The Good Ladies Of The Rain should get together and write a reveiw (s) and submit them/it on Richard Nacht Amazon site.  Leave to you to come up with that one. :)

Our next book will be:

The Weblog Handbook by Rebecca Blood available at Amazon. That link will take you directly to the book.

For anyone who in interested in The Realty Blogging Book Club all you have to do is join the club.

If you would like to participate in our book reviews please feel free to send me a contact message. I will add you to the list of Bloggers who take turns writing the reviews. :)

If you join our book club please keep in mind that The Realty Blogging Book Club puts points, ratings and rankings aside in order to learn. That is how we pulled off this project. We rose above the points and ratings. That was our best foot forward and still is. :)

Good Ladies...Do you think I put enough links in here?  SVW (smiling very wide)

Carole - you are so sweet "the best for last" - I'm glad you liked it, especially the title.  You guys are so creative with these titles!

Renee - The weekly meeting would be such an incredible idea.  Rick and I take turns going to our office meetings and would like to at least be involved in some of the discussion.  And you though you were being cute with your post - You are ahead of yourself girl!

Matt - I thank you for featuring some of these - we have put a great deal of effort into the book club and it's nice to be recognized and to be read!

Rich - what happened to your name? first your photo and now your name, what's next?  Not only Natch and Chaney should be grateful but what about all the AMAZON Publicity?

Barry - you have been instrumental in answering a lot of the questions that have come up from our discussion, thank you.

Jeff - you will be happy you bought the book and great to keep it as a reference.

Sharon - thank you, what a compliment!  It would be an honor if our reviews were included in there somehow.

Bill - go order that book!  you will not regret it.

Chris - don't pick - just read!

Maureen - thanks for Elaine's link - I had missed that post.  You know how difficult it is to implement something "different" - but I can see so much logic behind it.

Mark - I am so glad someone here is writing about the actual experience. Most people I talk to about blogging have a "fair amount of resistance", but I'm sure that will pass - good luck with the system and keep us posted.

TLW - Woo Hoo!!  We're ready for the next one.

Ann - thanks, we both got double stars ...should I do the cabbage patch now Mariana?

Steve - I think that's exactly what it would eliminate - the chapter has some interesting ways how this can happen, including blogs accessible to only department heads to encourage discussion.

You beat me to the punch!  I just set up an internal blog for our company on Monday, because of the suggestion in Realty Blogging.  I think it's exciting and should be beneficial to all our agents.
10:02am • #26
For all the reasons mentioned, a blog is an excellent tool for a company's internal communications.  However, for some of the more mundane things like lead management, listings and contact management, showing scheduling, showing feedback and other tasks, an inexpensive online intranet customized for real estate is useful also.

Tony & Leigh - Thanks so much - that's a great compliment and I'll be honest with you, I was a little hesitant about the book, but it has excellent tools and suggestions.

Jim - I agree with you, but they are completely different types of communications.  Rick and I use Top Producer for everything you mentioned within our team- but for actual internal office communication with your Broker, other agents and even Natioanlly, a blog would be ideal.

Nick - Que mas? consider yourself brainwased and go get the book - It's like seeing the light at the end of a tube - good surfing analogy?

Thanks for all of your great reviews.  I personally hate intranets because only a small persentage of agents actually log in on a regular basis.  But a blog is real time and usually extremely informative.  Thanks for you post!

Jim and Maria - the chapter has interesting ideas on how to make this happen.  Remember you can log in from anywhere, as long as you have a password, agents would not have to log in from the office server.

John - thank you, it's nice to know we have achieved our goal - thanks for reading.
