2007....So do you think you're smarter than last year?

Similar blogs across the board have a common theme as we approach the end of the year.  Without a doubt business will have its ups and downs, hopefully with minimal dips and relatively consisitent peaks (with steady holding patterns).  Locally, our area has had some consistency in activity despite the national trends.

Our industry often devotes much , dare I say TOO MUCH, of our time to what we do.  At least that's what some people tell me.  And they're RIGHT....But that's ok.  If you're in the minority of people in the world that truly enjoy what they do....and I'm talking about your job here, feel very fortunate (and I DO).  I've never felt that what I do is MY JOB.  It's who I am and that is someone who truly enjoys helping others.  I like to think that I'm giving away the gift of knowledge....the knowledge that I slowly and surely accumulate and then share a little bit of it with the next person who wants to listen.  My knowledge just happens to be about houses and my means of expression...well that's as a home inspector/educator (read my profile for more info).

I grew up in a construction environment...my dad was involved in anything and everything (cab driver to restaraut owner to builder (electrician by trade). With great appreciation for my Ivy League education, it's my dad's shared experiences as a builder for 30+ years that I owe MOST of what I do today professinally.  As a 1st generation decendant and the first in my family to go to college, it was a pretty big thing.  My parents came to the States with little schooling knowledge but with a thirst for life experiences.  I'm so glad those attitudes get passed on!

Yes, my schooling experiences has given me the knowldege to make decisions, some good and some bad, and help me develop ideas in a systematic way ...but it's a lifetime of accumulating experiences that molds your attitudes and beliefs that not only effects your personal behavior but your professional behavior as well.

The old addage that "knowledge is power" is true.  Take whatever knowledge you have personally and professionally accumulated and build upon that while you share that knowledge with others.  And while your doing that, realize that as much as we may think we're pretty smart sometimes, don't forget to LISTEN to others around us as well.  You never know when someone may tell you something really important.  My 2 boys and 9 month old daughter remind me about that everyday ....can't wait to hear what SHE has to tell me.

Take this little holiday lull with work and kick back.....Get re-tooled for 2008 and hit it running.

What a great post, you are absolutely right with out knowledge you have no power.  I do believe that I am getting smarter with the more knowledge I get.
